Color me surprised. I guess Ferentz wasn't happy with Rudock's performance in the second half of the Nebraska game and Beathard has looked good enough in practice to open up the competition.

Evidently, they're going to alternate series early on, unless one QB scores, then it's "make it, take it." Will go with best performing QB if there is a big discrepancy.

This is essentially a job interview for next year. We'd be much better off if Beathard just wins it outright as he has a lot higher ceiling than Rudock.

Interesting. I would be willing to bet that Butch has been preparing for both quarterbacks anyway, given the uncertainty of who would actually start the game. I'm not as optimistic about this game is other people may be, but at the same time I'm actually just satisfied that we actually made a bowl game and how valuable these extra practices work for us.

Our gameplan won't change much based on who's playing. You might see a few read option plays from Beathard that you won't from Rudock, but odds are good the offense will look the same for each.

Good. Now Barnett can sack them both! Jk, well not really.

I have all kinds of respect for Iowa. I'm hoping though that we play lights out since this is our first bowl in a while so that I can watch it over and over through the summer in anticipation of 2015.

You guys have been great to talk about the game with.

(I have no idea how to say that in a grammatically correct manner)

I'm going to be honest...this all sounds like a mess waiting to happen for a team's offensive performance.

This kind of thing usually doesn't play out well.

I agree. Just jacks with their rhythm. I'd be okay with playing them for quarters and then decide from there.

I have to agree. Iowa and Northwestern each I have respect for from the Big 10, the rest are posers. Hayden's Hawks were the real deal back in the day. Bo & Woody had stuff handed to them.

Rotating QB's is good for us. What is bad for us is when the starter gets knocked out and the back-up plays the rest of the game.

This is not going to workout well for them. The first guy comes in and doesn't get it done and we put up points, then the second guy does the same thing and they're mentally beat after two possessions.

At least this is what I hope happens... 😎

He is the one who swears we will someday get back Bruce Pearl to coach our bball team. 😎

I've never said that. I said I wanted Bruce Pearl to coach TN again and that our AD is a retard if he doesn't interview him.

Back on topic, I feel pretty confident that the Vols are going to handle Iowa.

Doesn't matter. Barnett and Maggitt will be on them all day long and when they aren't Sutton and Crew will be picking them off. It will be a looooong day for either QB.

Hope you can stop the power run game. You're going to see a lot of it before you see much passing.

Balance is the key.

I've enjoyed your conversations. Best of luck and have a great 2015 and beyond. Take note that unless Iowa's run game approaches bama's, UGA's or even Ole Missy's, balance may well require an effective passing game for the Hawkeyes to keep the chains moving. The Vols have seen the best. I suppose the absolute necessity for a fairly hot qb has got Ferenz reticent to stick to one who's a little off come game time. Also, from what I'm reading on both sites, UT seems to be more motivated. I hope I'm right. Happy New Year.

Thanks for the kind words. I would guess the team has a whole different attitude than the fans (I hope).

I would put Iowa's OL up against anyone's, especially with 4 weeks to prepare. We finally have a couple RBs healthy that haven't been full speed all year. Will be interesting to see if they're any more effective than they had been earlier in the year.

It sure has been good talking some football. As for Barnett he has his hands full with Scherff. It'll be interesting to see how they game plan for him. As for the QB situation, it's highly comical and I say this because KF is just doing this to shut up CJ's dad and give CJ hope. I really HOPE that CJ has a monster drive and creates some buzz to stay in the game because he really gives us the best shot to move the ball deep. Nothing against Rudock but it gets old watching his slow play progression all game long.

It doesn't matter which QB or both plays. The game plan doesn't change, stop the run and the pass won't develop. That pretty much the same every game we play.

It seems Iowa and Tenn have a relatively easy plan. Iowa needs to stop Dobbs and Tenn needs to stop the run game. If this is the case, I expect a hard hitting affair.

Iowa has not run the ball very well at all this year. That does not mean they won't try.

Ferentz traditionally will keep pounding the rock, especially on 1st and 2nd down. Then try to get the first down on 3rd and long. Its frustrating.

Did you know that Iowa has finished in the top half of the conference in rushing just 2 times since Ferentz's arrival?
