There's a biiiiig difference between having a lot of money, donating a lot of money, and being a "powerful booster."

What makes the Haslams so powerful is that they seem to believe their donations give them control over the University, as though they are buying equity in it.

Some boosters have a ton of money, but don't donate it to their school (Warren Buffett and Nebraska). Some boosters have a ton of money and donate a ton of money, but they don't care about hob-nobbing with the football coach (Tim Cook and Auburn). Some boosters have a ton of money, donate a ton of money, and believe that that money gives them access to/"ownership" of the program (Haslams at Tennessee, Phil Knight at Oregon, many different boosters at Texas, etc.).

Mr Ergen is somewhere north of $10 billion.

I seem to recall he denied having much of any involvement with personal donations to athletics during the last search after Beaver talked so long about him leading some secret anti-Haslam cabal. The big boosters generally have their names on buildings, such as Thorton, Haslam, Jones etc.

I keep reading from a bazillion different posts, that Tenn needs to Buy out CJP and staff and then finally $pend Big Buck$ and go get a proven top tier Head Coach and spend the big time money for a Big Time Coach. My question is, who is/are the big money Booster($)) that would pay for this bill? Haslam is out, we ran the whole family out 3 years ago.
The AD is facing at least a 50million dollar shortfall this year mostly due to Covid. So where do these funds come from?

There are very very few big boosters and they are not going to pay Pruitt’s buyout
Sit back and watch

Lol. Just to nit pick, if you added up all the money the Haslam family has made off of Pilot I’m sure it would be a good sum more than what Charlie has made.

You’ve got to give them man credit for enriching his family via opportunity

I’m still wondering when everyone is going to figure out all of UT’s problems started when Bob Kesling was named the replacement for John Ward? Perhaps Bob’s is the entire problem... when are we gonna replace him?

I highly doubt the funds are coming this year. Next year is questionable, too.

Haslam’s pockets might be a little deeper that the Browns are having a good year, but as mentioned, he probably isn’t lining up to write any checks.

I listened to a show where they said the school will borrow against next year's tv money to help with this years budget

I wouldn't complain

In all seriousness Jimmy Cheeks about drove UT athletics into the ground. Things he did are still causing problems

It isn't Sexton's job to do favors for UT.

It is on the people deciding on these hires and negotiating these contracts where they generally end up bidding against themselves to do a better job in the future.

Not that I have any faith whatsoever that the brain trust in Knoxville is capable of that at this point.

I heard Mike Gundy was interested in the job again however.
Jimmy is a great businessman and an upstanding individual. He’s been the ire of several teams after negotiating incredible contracts (Jimmy basically created the paradigm shift for sports contracts) that had to be bought out. IF I needed a negotiator for a contract - Jimmy Sexton will be my first call. His clients trust him for a good reason! After all is said and done - JS is still a Vol but business is business- it’s not personal.

And if any of these boosters were remotely willing to pony up the $$$, what have we done in the last 10 years to make them believe that we are the least bit competent and that their hard earned money will be put to good use?

It's always easier to spend someone else's money. I do wonder what we could do if every Tennessee fan donated $100-$1000 to some sort of fan-driven trust. I wonder if we could get to 30 mil.
Highly doubtful

according to swain, Jimmy Haslam is done donating to Tennessee (athletics). if we're going to get a donation to make a move, it'll have to come from someone else.

According to the NegaVols they know for a fact that we have boosters willing to throw away 50 million.

Charlie Ergen has the Haslam's net worth in his mad money account. There are other boosters Randy Boyd can turn to if necessary. Me personally I think the decision will be taken out of Fulmer's hands

and for those who don’t believe me

charlie ergen net worth: 10bn

jimmy haslam: 2.9bn
LOL...i promise you Jimmy, who owns the Browns, is worth over $2.9B. He could sell the Browns tomorrow for about that price, if not more. There are only 32 seats at the NFL Ownership table.

And that's just Jimmy. You didn't mention Big Jim's net worth.

If you want to know who, then read the names on the building on campus. Pretty simple.

In Tennessee, six residents made it to the elite club. According to Forbes, the Tennessee residents on the list are:

  • Thomas Frist Jr. and Family, net worth $11.9B (hospitals)
  • Martha Ingram & Family, net worth $5.5B (book distribution, transportation)
  • Fred Smith, net worth $5.4B (FedEx)
  • Jimmy Haslam, net worth $2.7B (gas stations, retail)
  • Brad Kelley, net worth $2.4B (tobacco)
  • Jon Yarbrough, net worth $2.2B (video games)

That's not the way buyouts usually work. Buyouts, especially this large, are financed out. That's why we are still paying Butch. If boosters were fronting that money, then we just write a check and be done with him. We need to sign the loan and send him down the road. It's over!
People think that you have to pay it in a 1 time lump sum. I don't get into this much. It would be paid over time, plain and simple. When they have Pruitt their in 2021, with a majority of the staff gone, and no assistant worth a rip wants to join a sinking ship, how many people will be at the opener of a possible 3-7 team (if we beat Vandy) vs Bowling Green? Maybe 55,000. Then as the season goes....maybe we finish 6-6 which the sheep will call a better season....as more fans wake up. How much money will the university lose. Then, the new SEC contracts come on next year and each school gets $20 million. And not only that, some of the Boosters are BILLIONAIRES....not millionares. And there are more than the Haslams there. Anyway, sorry to ramble again. Making A move is better business in the long run.

The first two, Ingram and Frist are big time Vanderbilt Blue Bloods! However as Vanderbilt continues its path towards extreme liberal left political correctness, these two families are slowly losing influence other than money.. but both these families can stack it deep $$$. It was John Ingram who flew Vandy AD to interview D Mason and it was Ingram who basically paid Masons Salary.
