I've read read two reports that said the BYU QB is not a grad transfer. This story details how a player can just leave school, enroll in a new school as a walk on without facing NCAA penalty: How can Jake Retzlaff bypass the transfer portal? Ex-BYU QB takes unconventional route by withdrawing

If the 'he got roughed up by his teammates' story is true, it makes sense as to why his mom took him away a couple of days and was asking on 'social media' :rolleyes: for coaches to help her with how to handle kids being rough with other kids. Sounds like stuff that happens all of the time in the locker room. And because we have full access to everything with social media, technology, etc. this story has been blown up to massive proportions that are probably not in line with what is really going on. That's why Hubbs and AP hasn't really made a big production about it IMO. Keep in mind we have a lot of fans today that didn't follow sports 20 years ago. These gamers fans have never competed in sports and don't understand what goes on behind the scenes. That's why they make it a bigger deal than what it is a lot of times.

No I don’t. I think the locker room has already communicated to him in no uncertain terms where he stands. And I’m sure he got the message loud and clear. He’s on the 💩 list. And he’s not going to be treated as if he isn’t.

I've seen him listed as grad student, not a graduate, and as "viewed as a grad transfer" so I'm not sure what his NCAA status is really.

Tulane, however, has a pretty decent law school and I'll bet they've had some sharp legal minds have a look at the civil lawsuit and his NCAA status for transfer.

But ..... he's only "verbally committed to Tulane" so the fat lady's only cleared her throat so far.

All he can do is be verbally committed. He’s walking on with no scholarship. He’ll show up at the first practice and first day of class.

This isn’t like the old days when you got kicked off the team and got drafted or went to the coal mines. The schools are interchangeable and very few kids seem to care. It’s awesome that the kids have options but you’re absolutely right about the accountability.

It's not what he does that could be the issue. It's what the young lady might do and the NCAA might do.

She's currently dropped her civil suit but I assume it could be refiled.

The NCAA may come after him or Tulane because I'm sure they don't like the idea of athletes getting the idea they can leave and show up elsewhere as a walk on to avoid any transfer rules. I'm not saying the NCAA will win but they may come after him or Tulane.

Unless somebody has proof otherwise, it looks like he doesnt have to sit a year. He can walk on anywhere and NIL covers his tuition. If whatever university wants to enroll him, he can play this fall.

BYU QB just left due to honor code violations and is walking on at Tulane as we speak. Many schools do not have an enrollment deadline until Mid Aug.

This isn’t helping Boo at all, the players that go hold out route aren’t helping themselves. You better believe NFL teams make note of these types that are never satisfied and look for easy routes. Maybe it is overblown, then again if he isn’t conforming and bonding with his teammates it’s not a good sign. Heupel has developed a great culture and letting one or 2 slide isn’t a good practice. Hopefully he can get back into the good graces with his teammates and the coaches, if not Tennessee will survive. Like Heupel said this university is bigger than any coach or player. If he isn’t willing to put in the time he likely isn’t going to put it in anywhere else either. GBO

I don't know if these are cases of bad apples or a broader cultural issue, but Heup's teams have consistently had big problems from an individual player for a while now.

There was that supposed dispute between Jeremy Banks and Hendon Hooker before the infamous 2022 South Carolina game. That's great that the team supposedly was 100% on board with the decision to leave Banks at home, but I can't help but wonder if that affected how they played (regardless of whether or not they had our signals). Now this offseason you've got these goofy situations with Nico and now Boo.

You are correct. Crazy stuff though. What happens when he still eats from the players 24/7 steak and lobster food service, gets the benefit of team nutritionist, strength and conditioning coaches and facilities, physical therapists and trainers, etc etc. I would think as a team QB he will likely have every benefit of being a football player besides tuition and a dorm room...which he can pay for both his school and apartment from his NIL deal. So in fact he will still have all of the benefits of players on scholarship...in fact likely better than some marginal players on scholarship who dont see the field.

The NCAA is an absolute crap show right now and will lose just about any court case these days pertaining to NIL and player compensation. The NCAA is nearly worthless now IMO. If they don't drop the hammer on Michigan then they actually are completely worthless.
