Boo Carter rumors from Basilio

What are his options this close to start of fall camp? If he's dismissed or wants to transfer, he has to sit out the season doesn't he? Seems like he's dug a massive hole for himself unless I'm missing something...
NCAA is toothless and will get dragged into court to lose again as antitrust laws are way against them. As others pointed out with the BYU QB who just enrolled at Tulane: he can drop / get kicked, then just enroll at another school and walk on with NIL covering his tuition. Scholarships are meaningless now.

Pulling this a week before Fall camp is somewhat of a new thing, at the very least a very rare thing.
I've got a theory that Boo went to some workouts, didn't like what he saw, and bailed. Just pure speculation.

Maybe he got a look at Joey, Merk, and G-Mac or the O Line or the DBs or WRs and decided "I can't buy in to this."

Again, it's a terribly selfish, short sighted, and likely career damaging move....... but so is dancing at a Coldplay concert with married arms around someone other than your wife.

Humans are neither basically good nor basically evil, but they are basically stupid sometimes.

It's stupid, but was just a matter of time before it happened. I'm sure there were many people at UT who thought "that would be so stupid for a player to hit the portal after spring practice" and then Nico did it.

So many of these players are surrounded by agents and others who are giving them horrible advice and don't have their best interests at heart. Not showing up for stuff and threatening to transfer is their negotiation strategy. It's also so shortsighted because if you think you have professional prospects, you really should be trying to get yourself in a situation that maximizes your draft prospects (which is the real payday), which might be different from the best NIL deal.
I guess he could take the NIL $ he’s gotten here and pay out of state tuition at Colorado and walk on.
Yep. That's exactly what Retzlaff is going to do:

I thought it was only graduate students who can transfer at any point during the year but everyone else has to go into the portal at the designated times. That's been waived?

I think so? Also in Heupel’s defense almost all of it has been outside factors out of his control IMO. We had the NCAA stuff left over from the Pruitt fallout that dragged recruiting each offseason up until a year or so ago and then the first Nico stuff last offseason with the NCAA and now this stuff with Nico and Boo. It also doesn’t help that local sports media and message boards run wild with rumors.
Seems like most off seasons pre-CJH had brushes with the law and unexpected departures. Our guys seem to have avoided trouble for the most part. I assumed it was by design based on the staff’s recruiting profiles? I’d guess they take some character chances based on talent and need but it must be fewer chances than prior staffs took.

No - there's a loophole though. See the Jake Retzlaff situation. He withdrew from BYU and is walking on at Tulane, bypassing the Portal.

The BYU QB withdrew from school. Period. He's choosing to walk on at Tulane. No scholarship, no promises, no Letter of Intent.

You know, a college kid who is going to see if he can make the football team. No perks. Nothing.

Surely the NCAA can't stop a kid from going out for football, can they?

Who knows? If he doesn’t want to be here then he should go . This bull$hit is so shortsighted and thoughtless.

Yep. That's exactly what Retzlaff is going to do:

At the same time, Retzlaff’s hand was kind of forced. He had an honor code violation at BYU. He engaged in pre-marital relations with a willing coed.😳 So then he takes his talents to.. checks notes… New Orleans. That’s a massive 180. Haha.

Edit: Did not realize that there was a settled Sexual Assault claim by the female that I said was willing .

I tend to lean toward the selfish description. He’s been given everything he has asked for and still isn’t satisfied. And mostly before he has really proven anything. Unfortunately in the current climate, he’s not the first and certainly won’t be the last. Some players are going to try to hold teams hostage and that’s the way it’s going to be.

Have asked this before: Are we having fun yet? Somebody let me know when we are.

It is and college kids are known for this but lots of people screw up their marriages and corporate careers with selfish and unwise decisions.

Youth gives a kid a chance to correct mistakes and I'll give Boo a chance to get in Heupel's office, talk with staff, and work this out just as we've given guys who screwed up off the field the benefit of chances to buy in and contribute.

Salter could've done well, perhaps, at UT and Heupel gave him a second chance and he chose otherwise at UT. Apparently he grew up after leaving and might make something of himself.

Sometimes the best thing for everyone is to talk it out and sometimes the best thing for everyone is for someone to move on.

Probably just the start of the "hold out" tactic? Trying to leverage more money, reps, etc? If any of this is true, there's no way I keep any eggs in this kids basket. Maybe he leaves school and walks on at his new school and plays? Not sure that's possible, but if his heart isn't in playing here and he won't risk injury playing, he should just move on. Frankly, I can't imagine Heupel giving him the choice....again, if this stuff is true.

And sometimes the kids family, agents, handlers, etc are the problem. No fixing that in some cases. Nico II? Sure looks like it.

It’s fun if we like having to roll our eyes 🙄 at yet another “pre-Madonna” that thinks they’re worth way more than what they’re getting. I don’t envy CJH and all the other coaches that have to put up with this bullshart.

I agree. I hope that both sides can come to a mutually beneficial agreement. It feels like we already know what that might be given that we let Nico walk. The thing that bothers me the most are the bad actors who are “advising” these kids, and truly aren’t looking out for their best interests.

I doubt that. He plays primarily on D, and we should be as good or better than last year. On offense, he would have had more of a chance to play this year and could have made some plays.

It is more likely he is getting advice that he could earn more or do more elsewhere. I have no insider knowledge, but it wouldn’t make sense for him to think well I am not playing for this team because I don’t like the talent.

It becomes a really toxic combination when it’s bad actor “agents/advisors” advising a head case kid. Boy, college football has really taken a hit with NIL/Xfer portal stuff in its current form.

Boo's best move, though, for money would've been to jump when Nico did, so I'm skeptical an agent is advising him (or at least a successful agent) to try to leverage UT this late. UT has SOME cards in this now because anything like just withdrawing is seen as weird and likely doesn't really bring a lot of NIL money. Boo isn't THAT good.

As evidenced by Pearce last year, simply "showing up" is noticed and costs money in the league, so an agent should know that too. If this is an agent's idea, I hope he has a backup career.

Parents, associates, etc are a problem as we saw with Nico. I can't tell a kid not to listen to Mom or Dad or Granny as lots of guys HAVE promised Mom or Granny they WOULD graduate and did graduate.

I would hope that Boo could have a conversation with Dobbs or Hooker, a back and forth..... likely ridiculed on VN for the vernacular used but that's just a social issue..... that might be productive for Boo's future.

It’s unfortunate that this is the college sports world thats been created . The greed, and I’m not saying there’s anything wrong with $, there’s not, but the $ is not going to be a long term solution to all of their needs. A kid from Chattanooga that ends up at Tennessee has every opportunity to become a legend there, build lifelong friends and relationships there, always have a home in multiple places across the state and gives it up for a few promises that may or may not be kept.

I guess we can hope, but if what's been reported as having taken place, I can't see a way he's a part of this program much longer. He's had his demand met very recently and now this? How do you trust this kid and his family with being a major part of our team this year? What message is being sent to the rest of the team? You know they're watching this. Heupel better be proactive and smart about this. The fact that something like this is happening on the heels of Nico makes me wonder about our so-called "culture".

I don't believe this is a money/NIL issue. There is some smoke that he was confronted (got his tail whipped) by some of the players on the team after not falling in line with our culture and that might be what led to him going MIA.

His mom had a post on Facebook in the last few weeks asking how coaches handle issues among players in the locker room.

We will see what Heup does but it feels like it's at a point where bringing him back could destroy everything he has built. I know there are mixed feelings about Boogie Bentley/Talkin Vawls but he has a relationship with Braylon Staley's dad and he told him that Braylon said this is the closest team he's ever been apart of.

I'm from Cleveland, TN and Boo is one of my favorite players on this team, but I just don't know if the juice is worth the squeeze anymore. We all remember the Jeremy Banks saga from the 2022 season.

As crazy as it sounds I think the last six months show how healthy the culture is. The teams that win championships are led and policed by the players, not the head coach. It sounds like for the first time in 20 plus years we have a group of guys that aren't going for this crap anymore.
