Can't make it this year, but here's who I'd make sure to catch:

Tool, The Police, and Widespread (obviously)
Pete Yorn
Damien Rice
Ben Harper
Wilco
String Cheese
Franz Ferdinand
Sasha and Digweed
OCMS
STS9
North Miss AS
Fountains of Wayne
JBT
Martin and Medeski

Oh, and don't miss Lewis Black. Funny stuff.

Don't be discouraged by the closed-minded that fail to appreciate this festival. It is incredible and will only continue to improve with the recent purchase of the land. Unless you are completely intolerant of others, you'll have a great time. Have fun and be safe!

I'm all for Bonnaroo but they are screwing us her in Birmingham. We have an annual downtown festival called City Stages (this weekend). Bonnaroo has a contract clause that any act appearing there cannot play within 150 miles (or something like that) for 2 weeks surrounding Bonnaroo - basically they sucked up every decent act and prevent other places from using the same acts. Kinda sucks.

Hey I actually live in Manchester, I went the first 3 years, Ben Harper is one of the best acts I have seen live. Great folks and great atmosphere make a fairly peaceful festival. There are usually more locals arrested than festival goers. I don't do it anymore but I bought some KB at the show and I am sure of the fact that it is the same stuff that killed Elvis. And the 80,000 people in town for 4-6 days really give our economy a boost. Bonnaroo is actually speaking at a Chamber Event I am about to leave the office for at noon.

I'm going on Friday, and I'm so excited! I can't wait to see Gillian Welch, the White Stripes, The Police, Regina Spektor, The Flaming Lips, Feist, Franz Ferdinand, Spoon... Yes, Bonnaroo is a physical challenge, and some of the people there can be barely tolerable, but seeing all these bands in one place is so totally worth it if you love live music as much as I do.

I don't see them on the list this year. The Birmingham press says the radius clause (in the contracts for most bands at Bonnaroo) is for 300 miles and 15 days before and after!

Free the music!

Like the clause or not, it shows one reason why AC is a great promoter.

Bonnaroo finally killed off Music Midtown in Atlanta, too. It was having some trouble anyway, largely because they were never able to find a permanent site after the Federal Reserve built a bank on the original one, but the final nail in the coffin was when Bonnaroo and Music Midtown were scheduled for the same weekend in 2005. Bingo, no more Music Midtown. It's a shame.

There was a time in the American music industry when some promoters wanted to be great at more than just making money. Clauses like that are just an unpleasant reminder of how long ago that was.

eh, i went to Music Midtown in 2002. while i had fun, it doesn't compare to a Fest like bonnaroo. it was stupid of them to schedule Midtown around bonnaroo that year.

honestly, i can think of about 10 resons why bonnaroo is better than Midtown, and none involve promoters trying to make money.

My comment about the promoters and money was aimed more at their restrictions to keep the artists from performing anywhere else the south for a month around their festival. They're getting their money; why crap on it for places like Birmingham and Chattanooga too?

(The answer, obviously, is to destroy any even potential competition. Which just shows how American music is manufactured and marketed just like any other commodity nowadays. Bill Graham would vomit.)

That just doesn't ring true. In the past few years, many bands on their way to Bonnaroo have played in Knoxville, which is just 170 miles from Manchester. So, there might be a clause of some sort, but not for that many miles and days.

Just going by what one Bham newspaper wrote. Could be wrong, could be a newer development, could be that not all bands are bound by the same contract...

That clause has caused Riverbend to front acts like Bel Biv Devoe, Earth Wind and Fire, and others. The Besse Smith Strut is the best night of Riverbend, though. (Monday night) We still get our Steve Miller Band, The Other Ones, Todd Snyders, and such throughout the week. The people are totally different than the Bonnaroo crowd. That's for sure.

I lived in a school bus and went on Dead tour in the early 90's. I guess Mania wouldn't have liked me back then. Oh well.
