Bobby Maze said the following about Mostella recently on my show. 'I really never expected Detrick to be able to do what he does. I know one time I was throwing him a bounce pass and he put his finger up in the air like throw it there. And I looked at him as if to say you mean throw it up there and you're gonna go up and get it? And he said just throw it up there and see what I do. So, I threw that ball up there one time and I was trying to be funny throwing it up at the top of the square and he came and got it with two hands and brought it down. And like a tell people, I played with a lot of athletic guys during my time at Tennessee. We were known for throwing alley oops. I'm talking about guys like JP Prince and Scotty Hopson. Mostella is the only guy other than JP Prince that's never missed one of my alley oop passes. He's something like 18 for 18. But he can shoot too. In the Rocky Top League, we've been down 20 points three games at halftime and we came back and won every one of those games. In one game he hit 6 or 7 three pointers in the second half and maybe four or five of them in a row. So, he can really shoot it.'

When I pressed Maze about saving the hype on summer hoops and that I've heard it all before about guys only to be let down, he offered this nugget. 'Detrick is a special athlete. In my deepest dreams, I'm not athletic as this kid. I told him that if I were him I would learn the scouts defensively for the upcoming season and get in the passing lanes. When this guy gets in the open court he just takes off from anywhere. It's unlike anything I've ever seen. He has a rare athletic ability and he has a knack too. And he has that dog in him. When the games get tight he wants to check the best player on the other side. I've seen him when the games get tight take the big shot. I've seen him hit consecutive 3's and jump over people too in those spots.'

So, there's got to be an Achilles heel in Mostella's game, right? 'The only thing is he going to have to learn is how to play in a structured system. Other than that, this kid has a raw and rare ability that you hardly ever see in today's game.' Wow. Sign me up! I'm there! EVERYBODY I talk to who has seen this guy tells me he's worth the price of admission. Get out there and check him out tonight at 7:30!

If he really is a solid 3-point shooter we may have a special one here. If Jamie Dixon wanted him at Pitt I have to believe he can play defense, and as for the aforementioned athleticism:

Sounds like an exciting player but "learning to play in a structured system" is difficult for a lot of kids who have always been such special athletes. looking forward to watching these guys play.

I only wonder if he can keep his grades up.
We may soon discover that academics is his only weakness.

Right now he plays no D what so ever. He couldn't stay in front of the worst ball handlers in the RTL. Something that he will learn though.

Gotta get cleared first.

When he first signed it was "hopefully a couple days and he will be cleared", then it was "I expect a decision by the of of June"....guess what, it's now July.

The way this is carrying on does not leave me very optimistic.

For about 35 minutes he plays no D, but you see those spurts that he can if he wants to. Punter was going bananas, Mostella decided no more and he hounded Punter leading his team from 20+ down to a victory, in large part to his defense on Punter.

He's gonna have to learn to play defense for 40 minutes, but with his athletic ability he can be a very good defender.

Going bananas. I'm a fan of that. Tons better than the popular phrase "going ham"

He should watch videos of JaJuan Smith and see how pesky of a defender he was. If he could be half of the defender Smith was, he will be dynamite.

Good cause Josh can't throw alley oops to himself so it's nice that there's at least one other guy that can get up on this team
