This part...I like:
Shoop said the focus on defense will be to put the best 11 players on the field and then scheme to the strengths of those players.

This part...scares me:
Jones has helped him find tweaks that can improve the defense

Jones needs to get out the way. Now maybe this meant getting a new DB coach

Well if we get as beat up as we did last year we are screwed. I don't think it's likely though

I would expect Coach Jones only tweak to the defense is another slogan or to bring back the "Fist Up Defense" mantra.

I think it a good idea and look for a much improved defense this Fall.

I noticed he talked about having less drama and having to fit in, I think further showing there was issues with some of the assistant coaches; some didn't click...
I think there's more changes coming regarding defensive assistants. And as long as there's not a ton of injuries like last year, I think the defense will be drastically improved next year

"Less drama"

I hate to hear that as a fan. There was drama between the DC and other coaches? Sheesh.

Maybe it says something that he stuck around. If I had to speculate I'd say Martinez was the issue.

when he has a healthy team with experience he does great things with a defense. That was his key at Vandy and Penn St continuity. I can not ever remember a year when a defense had this many injuries at all levels. He and coach Warren should be on the same page and yes I like our defensive recruit class. Good things coming. Have faith all who doubt. " Peace be unto you"

That's CBJ speak for; there might be a few players that may be on defense this year that were not last year!!!!!!!

Given that he just oversaw the 95th ranked defense in the country, I think it's fair to say that there better be a ton of differences, recognizable to the naked eye or otherwise, in 2017.

I think the biggest difference recognizable to the naked eye will be lack of injuries!! :crossfingers:

Would certainly help, no doubt about that. But we had many more fundamental issues than just injuries imo.

Playing 3rd and 4th team players may have a lot to do with fundamental issues. They get a lot less reps in Spring and Fall. Hopefully, but time will tell (7 more months).

How can you say that when the defense looked pretty good until the A&M game when the injuries began to mount.

Early in the season we were praising Shoop for his halftime adjustments. After the first half our first 5 opponents basically got no production.

I think Shoop is a GREAT coordinator. His track record says so. Last year was an aberration because of the injuries.

If our defensive problems were deeper than injuries how do you explain all those dominant second halves?

It's easy. I'll say it again. Defense was bad all season, became worse when the injuries mounted.....but then became horrific even as we got players (Sutton and DKJr) back late.

Define "bad". We won a lot of games because of our defense. VT, UF and UGA, too.
