“Definitely haven’t wanted to make it more complicated and we probably have simplified it, really,” Shoop said. “With all the injuries and young players playing, we’ve tried to simplify.”

That’s not Shoop’s style. He prefers more complexity. He has said his defense requires cerebral athletes. He also said he hasn’t been able to use his “secret sauce” much this season.

“We’ve had multiple calls within the framework of a single huddle call,” Shoop said of his previous stops at Vanderbilt and Penn State. “If they’re in this formation, do this; if they’re in that formation, do that.

“We really haven’t been able to do that as much this year as I’d like. Hopefully, that’s something in the last three games or in the future we will be able to do more.”

When Shoop was hired at Tennessee, he didn’t incorporate his terminology. He adopted Tennessee’s so the transition would be smoother.

“I was willing to compromise,” Shoop said. “Looking forward, I think there are some things I could have integrated. But the toothpaste is out of tube. I don’t really want to do it now.”

What he’s not proud of is the run defense and the propensity to allow big plays.

“That’s been our Achilles’ heel — the long runs and the long passes,” Shoop said. “Ninety percent of snaps, we’ve played pretty good football. But the other 10 percent of snaps have been really bad football.”

This was the issue clawson had.

The players couldn't grasp his offense.

Vandy probably has higher iq guys due to school standards alone....maybe psu too.

With the extra time to prepare I guess that means another slaughtering of a Big 10 school in the bowl game this year.

Sounds like Shoop is doing the CYA Shuffle while Tennessee defense is porous as an earthen dam. Recalling all the preseason hype about our defense leads me to believe this hire is bogus! :no:

Do you often draw conclusions without a grasp of facts? Obviously, he's had to simply with all the injuries. And, first year tends to be shakier. He needs some of his own recruits and the team needs to settle in new system. One of the reasons quick turnover isn't always a good idea.

When you have inexperienced DE's moving inside to play DT then you are probably going to give up some rushing yards. Also having inexperienced LB's at the second level will give up a few more rushing yards. Then bringing safeties down for run support will give up some passing yards.
Injuries have put the defense behind the eight ball.
The offense has to step up and score more and has so far.

Shoop will need a second year just for us to see a HINT of what he's capable of. His defense was demolished by injuries and now he's having to implement noobs.

I think the loss of Reeves-Maybin has been huge. He's our best tackler and we just don't have that LB that reads the play and reacts to the ball as quickly as he did

I think it has more to do with injuries and inexperienced guys playing than IQ.

Can anyone find out how many yards UT gave up AFTER they went up by 30? There was only 7 mins left.

I'd say he's way over simplified it....I mean on UK's 1st 2 plays the ball carrier wasn't even touched! Can we at least add "hit the opposing player with the ball" to the mix?

Although they give up yards, the defense has given UT w chance to win every game.

In our three losses, turnovers are to blame in the A and M and SC game.

The only game the defense got manhandled was against Bama.

Even in the Kentucky game, they gave up yards but prevented TDs (until the fourth quarter).

Shoop won't say this, but we suck against the run because we have no scholarship DT's left and have to put 4 Defensive ends on the field every snap.

To try and break it down any other way is foolish.

I think it is more like "its hard to train a complex defensive play when the players keep having to shift due to injuries" i.e., the people who have the experience in practice are no longer the ones on the field and hey, even Barnett cannot win the game by his lonesome.

Maybe Shoop and Pittsburgh could feel each others pain. EE was making it look easy last night.

Not only was the ball carrier missed on the first play Saturday, the RB wasn't either.

That is a fundamental breakdown of assignments that has nothing to do with injuries. And it has happened far too much this season.

Give him his "pass" this season for the injuries but no way anyone on this staff deserves raises or extensions beyond whatever bonuses they get for an SECCG appearance or bowl game.

This team came out flat and unprepared from the opening game and it happened again Saturday. If KY converts TD's instead of FG's we are all singing a different tune this morning.

Can't fault Shoop on the first play. The DB came on a corner blitz and crashed on the RB. He made the wrong decision and the QB kept it and took off with it. If he reads that and sees the QB keep it he has him 5 yards deep for a loss. Can't blame the play call there.. maybe the coaching, but not the play call.

When you don't have the personnel to hold up against any power 5 OL, they sure do.

Plus over 100 of those yards came in garbage time when UT had essentially put the game out of reach.

Im not saying it can't improve and that there is nothing wrong, but come on, we are averaging like 240 lbs across our front 7 right now, of course we're gonna get pushed around.

I can't fault Shoop for this year. What has he had to work with? Not only have we lost a bunch of defensive players to injury this year, we have lost the most important defensive players. Would JRM make all of the difference? Heck no. But in his scheme linebackers are very important and we lost our All-SEC senior linebacker for the year and our All-SEC Freshman for much of the year. Plus we were already thin at defensive tackle and then we lose our top 3 tackles. You aren't going to win the SEC with that kind of attrition in the trenches.

Without Shoops second half adjustments in the beginning of the year we wouldn't even have a chance at competing in the SECCG. Everyone seems to forget that. I for one am still excited about what he can do here. Give him more time to implement his system and his recruits. Everything will be fine.
