One of the problems I have, is we had a chance to get Wes Durham, he wanted it and the Sports Dept. went cheap, and got K-dog. Living in Atlanta, you hear this guy and think, "sheeeeeez, UT could have this guy calling our games, and we've got whats his face"

Did y'all see, or for that matter, hear Smokey today? At all? I didn't! I say put his a$$ down.

And its not about John Ward, anymore. He was one of a kind. Like Munson is to UGA fans, its about having someone we feel thats worthy of that position in our eyes. Some of us that are old enough, remember the radio was the only way to hear the games, and be able to see it as the announcer was seeing it. And you tell me what you get when you listen to our games on the radio.

EXACTLY!!!!! I get so sick of people blaming the venom towards kesling on following ward. I think blob is horrible compared to anyone I hear or see today. jmho.

I think kesling does a good job on tv, but on radio he is not exciting and cant keep up ....oh yeah,,,,,smokey is on the DL with worms..

For what it's worth I think Rick Russo on the sideline in those Pay Per View games has some talent when it comes to broadcasting. I also think Kessling couldn't hold Mike Keith's jock strap.

I think Bob had close to zero radio experience before taking over for John Ward. He was the Sportscaster for a Knoxville radio station. I guess everyone assumed he would be an easy transition into radio.

Huh.....you want to re-type that?

:ermm:

I liked Bob as the sports anchor on WBIR but as a radio announcer he is out of place....He doesn't know how to paint a picture for the audience and comes across as boring, bland, unenthusiastic, inarticulate, undescriptive, unemotional, insincere, uninformed and a dishonest homer.....Ward was a homer too but had the guts to say things like "It was a two horse race this afternoon in Athens...And the Big Orange took third! - back with more after telling you the final score - Georgia 44 Tennessee Nothing!"....Kesling would never think of laughing at a bad performance.

Guys,

THE issue with Kessling is that he is NOT a "radio guy"... his background is in TV.. not radio.

All my in-laws have backgrounds in both tv and radio, and all of them say it is tremendously difficult to make the crossover from one to the other...

Kessling is just never going to understand how to do radio.

I didn't even bother listening to the game because i can't stand to listen to him. had to be satisfied with seeing the ESPN ticker.. and now i'm catching up on the threads here to get the rest of the story.

With all the money that the University has, it is disappointing that we have a third rate announcer. I can't bring myself to listen to him. Too many mistakes, and he does a horrible job of painting a picture of what is going on. Tennessee could be up by 30, or down by 30 and you would not be able to tell it by Kesling's calls.

I listened to 2 games on the radio yesterday.

Kessling was about 100 times better than Munson--he should have quit 5 years ago.

I like him. He's as good as anyone else. Is there anything that you guys do like about UT football? I mean give me a break. Next you'll be wanting to put Smokey down.

since you brought that up, i do think a rabbit beagle would better serve our team as mascot.

Well, I'll offer my two cents, I like him just fine. I listen to football and basketball on radio - either at the games or even when they're televised. I always have, even going back to John Ward days (I prefer to hear a homer rather than the (not always) non-biased TV guys. I had to be in SC last Sat. and started out listening to UT-SC game on SC radio - ... talk about not painting a picture - they almost never gave down & distance. Yes, Kesling makes mistakes that are evident if you're watching live or on TV while listening, but so did John Ward. And yes, he so far hasn't developed the color that JW had, but I do like the usage of "into the checkerboards!" And while we're on the topic.. Tim Priest is about a million times more insightful then Bill "well, there again" Anderson.

I've listened to the local radio guys for both college teams and MLB through my XM radio. Compared to most others, Kessling is pretty good. Even well over 1/2 the MLB guys are horrible at pronouncing names and do nothing to find out information on the other team. We were spoiled on Ward and now we're like most others.

I like Bob ok who, IMO is mediocre at best and mistake prone. But remember when you're following the General Neyland of broadcasting, is anyone really going to be thrilled with him?

Kesling gets on my nerves after about 1 minute. For a big time program like UT, there must be someone better. Can they get John Ward to come back?

I will probably get hammered for this but I actually fell asleep yesterday listening to Kesling. He just doesn't add excitement to the broadcast. John Ward use to give me cold chills, Kesling puts me to sleep.

That is the first time I have listened to him do an entire football game. He is actually worse than I ever thought, if that is possible. On the Reynolds pick 6 he said something like "for a defensive lineman that is the best possible occurent". WTF? Also, the "checkerboards" when someone scores is just downright corny. Please fire this guy.

and get who, Jon Gruden?

Seriously, everybody blames our sub-par teams on the coaches..I have a different theory. I think our success was somehow mystically tied to John Ward. Think about it; ever since he left, the program's been in a steady downward spiral.

I fell asleep too, but I think it was more my fault than Bob's.

thats silly, the best choice would be a black-and-tan hound. coon hunters feed blue ticks to them as pups. jk

ive only listened to 2 Vols games on the radio in my life, so i consider my opinion a neutral one. that being said, Kessling was boring. i didnt mind the "checkerboards" though. i remember some posters talking about muting the tv and turning on Ward, so i must assume that he had an entirely different level of game!

Well, that doesn't excuse him. But either way, I would take 2 Keslings in the booth over 1 Kornheiser any day of the week.

Yeah, I (sort of) agree -- even though 2 Keslings would be 2 too many. Funny thing is, I originally thought Kornheiser might be funny when I heard he was going to be on MNF. I enjoy PTI and thought it might be a good fit.

Big-time wrong! This week's game took me past the limit. His waxing poetic about Brett Favre every time Favre scratched his balls made me switch the channel.

You know what I did like, though? I liked the first MNF game when Mike & Mike did one of the games. I thought they were good.

Can you imagine Bob Kesling saying...

Willie Gault, ladies and gentlemen, is running all the way to the state capitol building...

or

He's at the 50, the 45, the 40, the 35, 30, 25, 20, 15, 10, 5.... WHAT DID HE JUST DO?? HE SCORED!!! GIVE HIM 6!!

John Ward is a legend.

Kessling is much better than a lot of the announces in college football. I realize this every week when Sportscenter or Gameday plays the clips from the other teams. Florida's and LSU's have that fake emotion with their "Yes!!", "Ohhh My!!" when their teams score. Miss State's have zero emotion. Larry Munson's games can't be listened to because he never even mentions names or teams, it's "us, and them, and the running back this, the wide receiver that".

Some people just want to complain every moment of their life. Bob is a victim of that, nothing more.
