because the extra dollar spent to improve the quality will not translate into an increase in the number of radio listeners.

Ward was lucky because he broadcasted in a day when very few football and basketball games were aired on tv. He was the only picture a fan had to 'see' the game. And he painted a picture on the radio.

Fast foward to today and this isnt the case. Now, it more rare for a game not to be on tv. Add to the fact that with either regular tv or HDTV, there is a lag between the two and its not worth it trying to listen to the radio and watch at the same time. While the tv announcers are ok, listening to Bob doesnt add anything to the game so why even bother.

Of course the option is to use a combination of the pause button on a dvr or even a sync up radio but each require and intensive amount of work before they are synched. Then heaven forbid you switch channels and loose your 'pause' and have to start again.

So unfortunately we're stuck with Bob. He loves the Vols and served his time in Knoxville waiting for Ward to retire. He earned it but he just doesnt add anything.
