Hey guys, looking forward to the game this weekend. I have no doubt Tennessee will be getting a great coach if Fulmer is let go. It will not be Spurrier.
I know when you do not follow a particular program closely we are all guilty of using the national narative of what we think a program is, but sometimes that narative is incorrect.
Here are some facts about Spurrier at South Carolina.
Recruiting National Rankings:
First year with 2 months #24
Second year #4
Third year #22
So far this year his fourth year #15
The man is neither lazy at recruiting nor is he having a difficult time at South Carolina, this year could easily end up being another top 10 class.
The University is undergoing a $200 million dollar facility campaign. Coach Spurrier host monthly fundraising functions at his home in Columbia. He has moved his entire family to Columbia, sons and daughters and a sister if I am not mistaken. He does still have a brother in Tennesse.
He turned down overatures from Miami, Alabama, and Texas A&M the past three years. The reason for this, and all you have to do is ask him, he will tell you is that at South Carolina everything he can do will pretty much be a first time.
The man lives for stuff like that, he will even talk about the most mundane things like, "well this past game is the first time at SC team had 37 first downs in a game, did you know that?"
He has a chance to win the first SEC title for an SC team, first BCS game for an SC team, the first National Title for an SC team. He also knows that if his resume reads won ACC at Duke won SEC at SC and with comparable players as the other top teams in the SEC at Florida it was never even close, he goes down as one of the if not THE best coach in college football history.
If he goes to an Alabama or Tennesse, he can just win another SEC or another BCS game or another National Title. He will be here another 4 or 5 years. His defense is the best in the SEC and he will probably get another offensive line coach this offseason and that pretty much will set him up for a run next year at the East.
Quite honestly if he were to take the Tennesse job he would be further away from a shot at another SEC title than he currently is now. Garcia is his handpicked QB who is a freshman, his freshman wide outs playing this year are part of the #1 wide out class in the country.
Really another intangible thing is this,, last year after we lost to you guys, it was the most p'd off I have ever seen the man. I don't think he really likes you guys much.
The man has said again and again this is his last stop, he cast his lot here, and he is going nowhere. Everyone at SC knows that he is building the program the right way and he is NO way in danger of losing a job or being fired, he will end up being here a decade when all is said and done and no dobut will have his SEC title at South Carolina when he is done. That will send him to retirement with a smile on his face and a nine iron in his hand and free golf anywhere in the best golf state in the South for life
Butch Davis, Wake's Grobe, maybe even Bobby Johnson is who I would go after if I were you guys.
Safe trip if you are coming to Columbia, weather should be nice.
