Bleak future/Time to put the black curtains back up/woe unto us (merged)

Agree. But the basketball team won't get near 80% capacity with a .500 team.

Agreed. But after everyone has tasted success (fans, admin @ UT) I don't see people settling for less than a winner. If the next guy doesn't cut there will be a continued demand for a coach that will win.

I dont KNOW...I do know we win with Bruce as our coach.I know we sucked for 5 years before Bruce.Coach Green won alot but we got rid of him cause we feard ncaa problems..HA!..Before Green we had the Houston/Oneil years...see a pattern?

Doug Dickey and most Vols fans at that time didn't care about basketball. I say the times have changed since then.

The NCAA is going to lay the wood to UT if we don't fire Pearl. Besides the fact that even if UT decides to keep Pearl he won't be allowed to coach for 1-2 years, at least.

So what happens in the suspended year(s) for the men's basketball program? We flourish? Please.

Tennessee was relevant in basketball under Jerry Green, and it wasn't that long ago. Fans like Pearl because they bought his salesman schtick. The support you're seeing from UT fans for him now is a measure of how good a job he did selling himself.

comparing Green to Pearl is laughable

If you are going to quit going to games because Pearl isn't coach, then you're not a Vol fan, plain and simple.

If you keep spouting about how "history isn't on our side" yet can't understand simple facts like Doug Dickey is no longer AD and the facilities and basketball culture at UT have change dramatically, then you probably can't tie your own shoes.

My goodness we have some real mental midgets in our so-called "fanbase".

Tennessee is a football school. No doubt about it. If a new coach comes in and puts an exciting team on the court and wins, people will show up. If we're a bottom feeder in the conference, people will find other ways to spend their entertainment dollar.

You mean like....pretty much every other big time school?

No. Look no further than our traditional boarder rivals to the north. Kentucky fans would swim across the ocean to see their basketball team. You could fart at a football game and no one would smell it.

Tennessee Football is like Cubs baseball. People have shown up for games the last three seasons with a crappy product on the field.

Tennessee just hasn't sustained enough men's basketball success to build a strong base.

Not really a good comparison. Cubs baseball has sucked for generations and the place is packed. You can't compare 3 seasons with decades.

If UT football sucked or was mediocre for 20 straight years, Neyland would look more like Vanderbilt Stadium on Saturdays.

Same winning percentage. One conference championship, like Pearl. Went to the tournament every year. Similar choke job in a Sweet 16 game. Other than UT's easy draw in the tournament last year, same level of success. Green did beat Kentucky more.

I hope that's the case.

Again, not a good comparison, Kentucky has long sold out or near sold out their football games, for years. Not nearly the same amount of passion but the place ain't empty and hasn't been for a long time.

JG

161-106 overall record

won the East twice, 4 NCAA tourneys, 1 sweet sixteen

BP

231-99 overall record

won the east 3 times, 6 ncaa tourneys, elite 8, and 2 other sweet 16's. as well as gettin TN ranked #1 overall for the first time in history. let me ask you this, did JG beat elite teams like Pearl has done?

Note: this is not in support of Pearl, or support of his firing. just making the comparison

Exactly what I was thinking :good!:

so Green's team was ranked #1? Green's teams beat elite teams? wow didn't realize that. didn't know that Ohio St was an easy draw last year

Small crowds await.

If Bruce Pearl is fired they should have black curtains all over the university for the administration NOT supporting Pearl. If they fire Pearl, let OSU and the NCAA know we're going to provide 24/7 picketing for them to fire Tressel too. Let's make sure the Gander gets the same thing as the Goose.

Winning % at Tennessee
Green: .712
Pearl: .703

And they can't be compared? Yes, we beat plenty of ranked teams during Green's tenure, but I wouldn't say it's "like Pearl has done" because he could actually beat Kentucky every once in a while.

You're using both of their overall records, which is irrelevant. At Tennessee, they're within a percentage point of having the same 71% winning percentage.

So you're saying that it's "laughable" to compare Green's tenure to Pearl's based on, as far as I can tell, A) Melvin Goins' out of body shooting experience against San Diego State last year, and B) a meaningless ranking in February that lasted about 36 hours. Got it.

Whatever. Football is a top draw at Dook, Carolina, and Kansas too.

Yeah, all those regular-season wins and regular-season rankings helped us sooo much in the tournament...we definitely have bragging rights forever over Memphis now, even though they went to the title game and that great #1 team lost halfway through the tournament.

Green has a higher winning percentage than Pearl at Tennessee. You failed to put their Tennessee records down. And yes, Green beat several elite teams: he beat UK at a higher clip than Pearl; he beat Syracuse in the Carrier Dome; he smashed a top 10 Alabama team at home; he destroyed a #4 ranked Auburn team at home; he swept UK to win the East one year, and he won the overall SEC one year just like Pearl.
