I honestly don't understand those of you blaming anyone other than Hurd for quitting. Quitting is one of those things you do all by yourself. But fine, let's assess the alternative blame options:

1) "It's the o-line's fault! You'd quit too if you were running into a brick wall every play!"

- Behind the exact same OL, Kamara is averaging 4.9 YPC and Kelly is averaging 6.3.

2) "It's Butch's fault; his system sucks!"

- It's the same system that Butch has run his entire career.

- It's the same system that Hurd committed to.

- It's the same system that almost got Hurd the career rushing record and an NFL contract.

3) "It's Butch's fault; he lied!"

- There is simply no proof of this. Jalen hasn't said it. His mom hasn't said it. Butch has denied it. The "proof" we have is a few plays run in a bowl game against a soft defense and the word of a message board poster with an axe to grind.

- But let's take a terrifying trip into 74's alternate universe and assume that Butch Jones told Jalen straight up, "We will run more I and pistol next year." That STILL does not justify quitting the team in any way, shape, or form. I can't believe anyone thinks it does. That's like leaving your wife because she said she was making steak, but instead she made salad. Even if salad is worse than steak (it is), a change of plans doesn't justify quitting your commitment.

4) "It's Butch's fault; he was unfair to Jalen!"

- Hurd has 122 carries. Kamara has 64 carries. Kelly has 33 carries. He's doubled and quadrupled their carries, despite doing significantly less with more. If anything, those two would have been much more justified in being upset.


In the end, you can point fingers all you want, but there's no one to blame for quitting except the quitter.

Do you ever wonder what part you played in all of this? About a month after the Outback Bowl you come on here and start telling everyone that Jalen was going to leave but the coaches put in the I formation sets in the outback bowl to keep him because he was unhappy and looking around. You said that he was unhappy with the staff and the way he was being used.

Did you ever think that maybe... just maybe that it would be best for you to keep your mouth shut as this would be easy for the coaching staff to figure out that Jalen was telling people with pretty loose lips about private conversations and grievances that he was discussing with the coaching staff. So now you have put the coaching staff in a very tough situation where maybe they had the best intentions and were really trying to do right by and help your son... I mean Jalen. Even if they planned on running more I formation and a system conducive to Jalens style of running they can't really do that. Because you have aired it publicly and they certainly can't have every 4 or 5 star thinking they can come in and dictate the offensive system the way Jalen did.

Do you own any of this? No matter how small, you do realize you had a hand in this right?


For the record, I'm not a fan of Butch, but I always support the team... I don't think he ever gets it done at Tennessee. This whole situation is a sign of his stubbornness and unwillingness to deviate from his system offensively. And to make it worse he and Mike were apparently the last two people in the state of Tennessee who realized that AK and JK were both better suited RBs for his system. Even though they see them every day.

Might be a while for Vol74 to get back to you. I'm guessing he's helping Jalen pack his U-Haul to high tail it out of Knoxville. They gave him the Kiffin rental rate.

so color me stupid for refusing to accept the deluge of information coming out from the establishment in the first few days after Jalen's departure is announced as "the gospel truth"....

I choose to believe it is just damage control....and--even YOU DON'T REALLY KNOW what is TRUE at this point in this saga...if you really would adopt an honest and objective evaluation of all the information to this point.

Prudence would seem to require you to check your own "objective" thought processes until the story continues to unfold and all the facts are laid out on the table....and I believe that will not occur any time soon....

I can't disagree with a lot of your post, but I do disagree with this. Almost all of our TDs in the passing game against FL and UGA were schemed. Specifically the TDs to Hurd, Wolf, and Malone. The TD to Jennings was schemed as well. It was successful due to Tabor falling down, but Dobbs was never going anywhere else with the ball on that play. The A&M game was "scheme" porn. The offense was huming. The play calling was remarkable, specifically with the screen game to Kamara.

That's not exactly what I meant by "schemed" open. Petrino's WR's often run sloppy routes. Their goal is to get to certain spots at a certain time because Petrino forces D's to make decisions and often confuses them. He does it to everyone they play and not just once in a while.

In fact-most of our long gains in the passing game are the result of scheme where the play points to one obvious option. The INT to end the Coot game should have gained 30 if Dobbs lets go of the ball on time. And I'm not trying to rip on the QB here-just pointing out what happened.

A good "scheme" doesn't lead to one obvious option. It forces a D to make decisions and sometimes mistakes that leave one or more receivers open. FAR more often than not, UT's receivers are tackled immediately have the catch or have to catch the ball while heavily defended. This isn't new or limited to this year. It has been constant under Jones.

Has the offense always been operating with great effciency? Obviously not. But it sure has had its moments.

FAR too few against better opponents. What you think is "scheme" vs lesser D's could just as easily be athletes.... right?

Just for clarity's sake.... you aren't really suggesting that Jones is close to on par with Petrino, are you?

A coach chooses a scheme that he feels is best for his TEAM. Right or wrong this is the coaches reponsibiity. There are 84 other scholarship players who want to play and win just as much. A star shines. PERIOD That is what they do. A team player says "coach how can I help the team win" not "coach screw everyone else needs put a system where I can be featured". No one at the collegiate or NFL level wants any part of that trash.
Jalen is a freak talent and IF WERE GIVEN BETTER ADVICE along the way likely would have adjusted to excel in the scheme or arranged for an amicable separation.
The crap you and his step dad (you) and uncle etc are making him look like a silver spoon spoiled brat who gets his way or screws everyone and takes his ball home.

Butch may be running the wrong offense for Jalen, but he did pretty freaking well with it when he wanted to put forth the effort. Time will dictate if Butch is worth his salt, but you and Jalen's family are turning an unfortunate situation and making him INCREASINGLY DAMAGED GOODS.

Do yourself and Jalen a favor. STFU and go see if y'all can finally give him some good advice. Which should be...stop the dang drama get focused on preparing for the draft and becoming more humble so teams will give him a chance.

I'm not saying Jones is on Petrino's level at all. I was just responding to a post I perhaps misinterpreted. I will say though that WRs run open a lot in this offense.

And since you brought up Petrino-he has a QB that puts the fear of God into a defense. That will create open space for WRs and the running game.

In terms of how we play against lesser teams it seems we are playing to just not get hurt and get the game over with. Those games have truly been bizarre, and are troubling. It's why the easiest money you can make is betting that TN won't cover against a non-conference underdog.

I am not totally disagreeing with your statements...But consider this:

There is a lot of time between the bowl game and spring practice....With a very significant event in between: National Signing Day in February!

We only ran 8 plays from the I formation during the NW bowl game....and Hurd gained about 32 yards on 6 carries....the 8 plays only produced about 50-55 yards of total offense and no points...it was neither necessary, nor an important component of the game play required to beat NW....so why run it at all????

Do you have any answers for that question? How can you continue to explain it away?

Hurd quitting makes it easy for everyone to overlook some very obvious indicators of "shady" actions by CBJ.

You can check my posts over this entire season to see it for yourself that what I am saying is true (concerning my defense of CBJ and Debord).

I also have said on here that CBJ/Debord's game plan against aTm was BRILLIANT!!! All except for that last play called in the 2nd OT.....

I've said in this entire screwed-up mess that I am CONVINCED that CBJ lied to Hurd in order to keep him form leaving at the end of last year.

I've NEVER said that anyone else had to be agree with me. I've never called anyone names for disagreeing with me....But I have responded to the mindless and emotional drivel on here from those who can't think beyond anything other than "JALEN QUIT--HE'S A P.O.S."

For the final time--here is my explanation:

1. I believe CBJ lied to Hurd to save HIS OWN AZZ from answering more tough questions last year in the off-season about the number of players who were choosing to leave his program.

2. He could explain away those other players who left within reason--but NO WAY could he explain Hurd's departure after his performance in 2015.

3. It would be an uphill battle at that point to convince anyone that HURD was a bad apple and cancer on the team....No one would've bought it at that time....No one!

CBJ--IMO--would've lost all of his positive credibility and outlook over the program with the departure of Hurd.

I mean--what coach in all of the USA would not have salivated at having Jalen Hurd come play for you after the season he put up last year...

All of those other coaches I mentioned above NEVER have had to FIGHT for CREDIBILITY in their PROGRAMS because they are all RECOGNIZED WINNERS who have been there at the highest level and DONE THAT....

With the exception of Fitzgerald at NW--but he gets a lot of rope because it's his alma mater...and the Wisconsin coach is still early in his career and doing an EXCELLENT JOB....Same for the NC coach....

But--CBJ was already under INTENSE SCRUTINY in the media and because HE BLUNDERED AWAY wins against both OK and Florida on his home field....and his coaching cred had already suffered a huge hit....

Concerning Hurd--

I've said repeatedly that his decision to leave now is STUPID and IMMATURE....and I have NEVER CONDONED it for ONE MINUTE.

For the record, I'm not a fan of Butch, but I always support the team... I don't think he ever gets it done at Tennessee. This whole situation is a sign of his stubbornness and unwillingness to deviate from his system offensively. And to make it worse he and Mike were apparently the last two people in the state of Tennessee who realized that AK and JK were both better suited RBs for his system. Even though they see them every day.

I've never met Jalen Hurd....I don't know him....I don't know his family....I don't know his friends....I don't know anyone on the inside of the UT FB program....

And for the record--I have publicly advised 74 on thru this site to have Jalen contact Harbaugh at Michigan and go up there, sit out a year, and come back at RB for them in 2018 with a vengeance and for a coach who has been there and done that.
