1st Freshman QB (2004) to start UT Opener in 59 years (beat out Freshman Ainge).

Truly electric dual threat QB. A lefty. Ran better than Schuler and Dobbs.

Shocked the SEC. Beat Florida and UGA. Collarbone mid-season; Ainge took over.

10-3 (7-1). SEC-E Champs. Throttled TAMU in Cotton Bowl.

Schaeffer gets in fight Spring '05, transfers.

Tennessee returns to flat-footed QBs (apologies to Dobbs).

Fulmer fired; Kiffin jettisons 5* Taj Boyd commitment (starts 47 games for Clemson).

Butch fired; Pruitt jettisons 4* Dual-Threat Adrian Martinez commitment (Wins starting job; Freshman AA).

15 years of misery.

Schaeffer played sparingly in the UF and UGA wins. Ainge was the main QB for those games.

Schaeffer would have ended up at another position or transferring if not for that incident.

Agreed (although had critical 1st down runs @ florida). Fulmer not yet committed to RPO. D was playing very well all year.

If he's healthy v Notre Dame, we win easily. Ainge could hardly walk.

I agree. His legs alone would have been enough to win that game. He wasn't a good enough passer though for him to be an option long term. Teams would have loaded the box and forced him to beat them with his arm.

Of course. But we're always bowl eligible.

Did Pruitt jettison Martinez, and did Martinez simply decide to flip?
Everything I've read said this was not like Kiffin and Boyd.

Not Scheaffer, Ainge. Ainge should have never been a QB anywhere in the SEC after his dismal performance in 2005 LSU game.

We have been loaded at QB the last ten years or so. We’ve had like six NFL QBs on campus since Phil left.

None of those guys would have made a meaningful improvement. You have to have the supporting cast and decent coaches.
