Blade Tidwell

The run-up to the start of the season has quickly transitioned from uncontrollable excitement to a bad nightmare. First Halvorsen, now Blade? Two huge arms that now (at best) will be back in late April or maybe not at all.

This really sucks. 😭

Thoughts and prayers with Blade on a quick recovery.
Losing Halvorsen and Blade for any amount of time is tough. But I do think we have enough quality depth for the front end of our schedule before SEC play starts. I think we get blade back before SEC play starts and getting Ethan Smith will prove to be big once we get all our guys healthy. I’m think Smith will have a big year for the Orange and White.

Man this sucks.... Who is the most likely candidate to take his spot in the rotation?
I think Ethan Smith is good enough to the the guy. Only issue I believe is rather he will be eligible or not since he transferred so late. Look for Camden Sewell is more than capable. End of the day we have a very good baseball coach and I do believe he will have all the boys ready to fight regardless who takes the mound.

I believe he just got cleared, he’s been on campus a while.

Shouler injuries are notorious for being unpredictable. It's a complicated mechanism. Let's hope Blade's injury is more straightforward and less intense than it could be.

I'll be at that Ole Miss series, so I hope it's the heroic return of Blade. A 1-2-3 of Tidwell, Dollander, and Burns would be filthy!

Guessing whatever series he comes back for, he’s the Sunday starter to give him that extra 2 days of off time.

I would say Saturday starter so he could be the Friday starter the following week. Don't think he would do that pitching Sunday.

Either way, I can't wait till he does pitch. My son and I are going to one of the Florida games when they come down since it's only about an hour away.

I could see this being the case, as well, so that they can work him in on a day that may turn into a bullpen day regardless of who is pitching. Beam hasn't been pitching much beyond the 4th-5th, if I'm remembering correctly, so they could maybe work more guys into whatever game Blade pitches first. I imagine they will have him on a pretty reserved pitch count to start out, just to monitor that arm and ensure that the soreness isn't creeping back in.

I just want to see him on the bump, because he is such a talent.

Depends on how many pitches he throws. Probably will be on a limited pitch count his first time out. Might even come out of the pen.

End of the month is great news. That would mean they’d only miss the South Carolina series (in terms of SEC play) and likely come back against Ole Miss
Just a word of caution. Coach speak for ā€œon the moundā€ could very well mean throwing from the mound vs throwing from flat ground, which is a progression for rehab.

Very true, though Vitello seems to not really be one for a ton of coach speak. One of the aspects of his style that I find so refreshing is that he just answers questions that are asked of him without a great deal of subterfuge. I feel like it is a sign of confidence that we rarely see out of college coaches. Everything on the football field might as well be state secrets with how paranoid they act.

I get what you’re saying but, in this case, he may be saying exactly what he meant to say if he meant that they’d be throwing off a mound in practice as opposed to pitching in an actual game this month.

I agree with Titan05 here. He explicitly said "we're not rushing them" and then clarified they would have to pitch to live hitters after they get on the mound. It's definitely a bit vague, but I think the plan is to have them throwing on the mound (i.e. practice) by the end of the month, live hitters in early April, and a return for mid-to-late April.

Still better than what we thought this could have been.

Not to draw too many conclusions, but when Chris Sale was going through rehab this past year, Alex Cora frequently referred to getting Sale "on the mound" and he meant just throwing elevated pitches and not throwing from a flat surface. He didn't come back into the rotation for 2-3 weeks after he got "on the mound."

I don't think you move Dollander from Saturday to get Tidwell up and going. That's the most pivotal game in a series because you can either win the series or set up to win the series after a Friday loss and he's our best pitcher right now.

Looks like CTV was right! End of the month is tomorrow.

I imagine Blake gets no weekend starts in April but CFA works him back into shape during the month and gets him ready for May/June run.

I get my info straight from Jimmy Hyams BTW.
