During the BS game, the clown announcers were fixated on three guys holding black screens on the sidelines purportedly to protect secret signals. I've never noticed this before. Maybe it just escaped me before. But, what I was wondering is, what good is it? Can't the signals be picked up on the opposite sideline? Don't they use decoys? Is this my beautiful wife?...er...sorry.

It also provides a contrast so the signs can be seen more easily. Heup used them last year, too.

We joke and call them The Wiggles. Those with kids over 10 years old know who they are.
Exactly, thank you. Those big black screens have little or nothing to do with signal security. They’re all about signal visibility. When running plays as fast as we do, players on the field don’t have time to find an individual who might be signaling. Finding the big black screens is immediate.

Thanks for the clue! Contrast background makes sense. I had been wondering how in the world the team could process plays so quickly, too.

And, I know of these Wiggles. Teletubbies, too.

Yep, same concept as the “batter’s eye” in baseball.

Guess my question is, DO they really need to be as big as they are? Seems like waist height to 7 feet should do it for contrast. Looks like a parasailing competition gone bad at present.

100% so the players can see them better. Has nothing to do with hiding signals as you see the signals are in front of them.

This..the contrast provided by the black screens makes sure everyone on the field gets the call
