Black Monday in the NFL

Well, it's a thread about coaching terminations in the NFL.

Many would argue that Wade Phillips has earned his termination this year.

I remember now. And I still say you could do a lot worse than CPF. And some might say Jerry Jones is like CPF. Both are afraid to hire people that would overshadow them. I know CPF could "overshadow" Neyland. What am I saying?

Pete Carrol seems to reload coaches as easy as players. It all has to do with assessing talent whether it is a potential coach or a player. That is something Fulmer never could do aka Randy Sanders and Dave Clawson as OC. Fulmer thought hiring Clawson would either A: make him look smart by going to a spread but he was to stupid to realize he never recruited players for that type of offense or B: If it failed he could use Clawson as a scapegoat just like Sanders.

Pete Carroll is not a fair comparison to most. It is not difficult for Carroll to bring in top coaching replacements. Or players either for that matter. The percetnage for either to spend 2-3 years in his system, especially the way he teaches his coaches, and they know they will move on and up. Same can probably be said for Bowden and JoPa.

The biggest embarrassment so far this bowl season for the Bowden clan was turning on ESPN and seeing Tommy dressed out for commentating.

I liked it when JJ hired Barry Switzer after Johnson had built the team up. It took Switzer 3 years to tear down what Johnson had left, although he did beat the Steelers for the championship, the following year he went 6-10 and resigned

That is why no one should ever compare Fulmer to some of the greatest college coaches of all time. Those 3 coaches are teachers and Fulmer was only a student.

Accomplishments not withstanding, cause PF did post enough wins to still be in the top 4/5 all time NCAA percentage. At one time surrounded himself with a staff to help do that. Any manager worth his salt regardless of profession knows how the work gets done. (I couldn't be in here typing this if I didn't have the right people in place on the steel yard.) But, the main difference in PF being remembered as is, verses being in hte same conversation as Carroll, Bowden, or JoPa was the lack, or loss thereof, of that fire that keeps it going. Whatever it was that changed in him the last few years affected recruiting choices, coaching choices or whatever. Otherwise, he would retire at UT, and be in the same conversation with the "legends." He was there on the steps with the screen door open, and forgot how to knock loud.

If "ifs and buts was candy and nuts we all would of had a very Merry Christmas" If you want to think Fulmer was good go ahead, as for me I see the deceiver for who he was and I am glad he is gone!

Looks like the Saban to Dallas rumors are starting....

Bammers better get out their checkbook if JJ comes knocking. Satan should be able to get another million out of the Bammers just for sh$ts and giggles.

You haven't been around long enough to consider me a "Fulmerite" or you'd know better. I've been ready for change for several years now. And I was calling for Chavis before I lost faith in Fulmer. I thought the Chief to be the bigger "deceiver." But, facts is facts. Fulmer's winning percentage is still top 5 active regardless. Further, I neither had ifs, buts, candy or nuts and still had a Merry Christmas.

Isn't Jack Del Rio scheduled to get his arse canned?

Watch for Marvin Lewis as well.

The Bengals will keep Marvin Lewis. They're not going to eat his contract, and Lewis managed to win the last three games (and tie the playoff-bound Eagles), so that should keep some wolves from his door.

Del Rio, I don't get. I think he can coach, and I like his overall mentality, but his teams perennially underachieve. It's very, very hard to win in the NFL without some semblance of a downfield passing attack.

Del Rio, Lewis and Gruden will likely get one more year max. But, they have little coming back, so it will be more of the same next year and they will probably all get fired.

Eric Mangini of the Jets gone!!
Romeo Crennel of the Browns gone!!
Rod Marinelli of the Lions gone!!

I wonder what impact if any it will have in the college ranks such as a team going after an Urban Meyer or Brian Kelly or someone else.

According to ESPN is that Bill Cowher is not interested in any NFL job at the moment but who knows.

F the Jets. After the cheering of Pennington's injury last year, I hope that franchise is cursed and never wins anything important again.......not like they have in the last 30 years anyway.

I didn't call you a "Fulmerite" I merely said if you choose to believe Fulmer was a good coach to go for it. Chavis did have some poor defenses from time to time but he has just as much with Fulmers success as Cutcliffe in alot of ways. I am glad you had a Merry Christmas I am sure the Steel business is feeling the economic woes as many other companies are. My Christmas gift came early when Fulmer got fired.

Maybe I misunderstood you. As I will say Fulmer was a good coach that at one time placed a good staff around him to be that successful in his first half of his tenure, he lost that vision/wisdom. The firing was the right decision. I'm just saying if he had not lost his way, for whatever reason he did, he could have made the elite status. No HC can do everything. The one thing they can do is pick the right staff to run the operations while they steer the ship. He forgot what that meant and needed to go. Even if he had secured that staus, he would still be a notch under the other three in any conversation.

But wasn't he criticized for having a "stale" offense. Wasn't that the reason for going with Clawson? And another thing Gman, how did we wind up in the middle of a Dallas Cowboy thread?

No, he took Clawson because Cutcliffe left to take over Duke. But I think you know that.
