When did uga order special jerseys and pants for their first game of the year? Who is in charge of this stuff for us? Surely someone in the AD knows when new jersey orders need to be submitted by.
You're kidding.Except they weren't denied, they didn't have time to get them made. DeerPark already reported this. The pandemic also caused issued for teams getting uniforms. We were supposed to have orange pants for the opener at SC and wear the white over orange as a tribute to Johnny Majors but they didn't arrive in time.
This is a silly rumor someone started.

If our contract did not allow for black jerseys what was Nike trying to get done ? Or were they reworking to make black jerseys available ? Maybe you could do us all (or just me) a favor and pass on to the powers that be that Black jerseys were cool about a decade ago, that’s it’s been waaayyy overdone and maybe they could consider doing something a little better like a throwback. Just a thought.14 to 16 months out is when a jersey or uniform change has to be finalized. Georgia had been planning its throwback to honor the 1980 team for some time, since it was an anniversary. That allowed Nike to get theirs, as well as their new black jersey, done well in time for this year‘s order.
As I posted several times since the start of the season, Nike tried to get something done on short notice for Tennessee, but because of Covid shut downs overseas and domestically, they had production issues with their materials and with uniforms. Many teams did not get their full orders on time. Tennessee did not have its orange pants until three weeks into the season. Ordering a jersey in June in time to get it done and on the field by October is just not realistic with today’s turn around. There’s no manufacturer in the country that could do that.
Were there some guys mad that they couldn’t wear a black jersey and then auction them off to support causes in the Knoxville community? Sure. Did they not play as hard as they could because of it? Absolutely not.
Team leadership knew it would be a long shot to get them done back when they were announced, and the players council was aware before the season started that black jerseys would not be available at any point this season. So it’s not like it was a surprise to them the week of the Kentucky game, as is being insinuated here.
Finally, that account is formally known as Sabanocchio/Sab/Ben Stancliff, a noted spreader of misinformation and frequent thief of recruiting news from subscription sites, that he would then post as his own. He’s extremely unreliable.

Thanks DP12 great info. When the contract was signed, Nike was on a big kick of giving teams a unique color instead of black. UT had already been using Smokey grey at an institutional level for about 10 years and in the athletic department for two years.
So what the contract spelled out as far as uniforms was orange, white and Smokey grey. Having it spelled out like this allows Nike to keep raw materials for uniforms in various sports ready to go so if there are any changes inside the timeline I mentioned earlier in this thread, they can typically be accommodated, at least to a certain extent. It also allows Nike to plan out fan gear orders a couple of years in advance to keep up those timelines as well. You’ll notice that outside of the Nike golf line that some stores are able to offer, none of the sideline apparel has been black since Nike took over in 2015.
When Fulmer took over, he wanted teams to move away from the Grey as a third option. He preferred teams go with a throwback look, as you suggested. You saw baseball and men’s basketball do that for alternate uniforms, women’s basketball was scheduled to do one last year before the coaching change, it hadn’t gotten to football as of yet, though there had been plans to do so this year as a part of a Nike rivalry weekend package the last two weeks of the regular season. Unfortunately, coronavirus killed that program for the 12-14 schools that were going to be participating. Maybe next year.
When the idea for black jerseys came up, Nike did not have any ability to get uniforms made, but attempted to get raw materials to one of its alternate contractors here in the US that helps them with uniform overflow. Their primary uniform manufacturer, Powers Athletic, was already bogged down by production delays caused by coronavirus and delays and materials coming from overseas, also because of coronavirus.
So what Nike has done going forward is added black to our color palette so there is at least the possibility to use it for uniforms in the future. I do not expect fan apparel to be made in black, I expect Smokey grey to continue there. I do expect a black version of our current uniform to be available next season for the team and at retail.
