jumper shows the ability to read where the play has been, while constantly getting blocked, tripped up, or run through. The coaches may like him for knowing the game but he is a huge liability because he gets easily blocked almost every play.
Butuli looked good at olb, but either way we need something new at mlb. The kid has gotten 3 seasons with chances to prove his worth and has never impressed.
Simply do not understand the disrespect that continues to be paid to Jumper. Sure the kid was not a 5 star recruit. But so far he is getting better and better. How did our five-star recruits fair last night? for the love of God the kid got 19 tackles in that game last night. Je's been the hero and more than one football game last season. we got some folks who need to get over his star rating and watch what he's actually putting on the field. That kid plays with heart.
The criticism is the response to all the unwarranted praise he is getting by a lot of posters with an agenda. Everyone here knows he isn't a SEC caliber LB but given that he is all we have and tries his best and gives his all. It should be left at that. But a faction on this board has decided that since he does give his all the fact that he is not an SEC caliber LB should not be mentioned. They have proceeded to try and shut down the honest discussion about his lack of talent thus causing over blown criticism.
I don't know why "heart" is so praised when many of our players with more talent have just as much heart as Jumper. Seems like a great teammate and all but if you're not a net positive on the team then you need to be on the sidelines or in a more limited role.
Unfortunately he probably missed that many tackles as well. The little GT QB had a record performance rushing right around and through Jumper all night, not to mention the UT defense gave up more rushing yardage tonight in the history of the program. Much of that can be laid at Jumper's feet not because he is a bad kid or not trying hard rather because he is unable to manage playing well at this level of competition due to a talent deficit. Many of those gashing runs by GT you can see on replay Jumper two or more steps from where he needs to be to make the play, other's he is reaching with
arms and hand tackles being run through as well. I feel for the kid actually to be in this position.
Jumper was a liability tonight. I like that he gives his all, I really do, and I want him to succeed. But go back and look at the replay. He simply couldn't make a play from the mid-second quarter on.
Jumper was serviceable tonight, but anybody just looking at his number of tackles would be mistaken. As mentioned, they ran almost 100 plays and nearly all of them were run plays. He made a few great tackles, but a lot were down field and on numerous occasions he was just flat out ran by or missed the tackle. A lot of our LBs, including Jumper, do not seem capable of shedding blocks, getting pressure, or taking good pursuit angles. Jumper may not make the 2 deep at another SEC school, but we don't have the luxury of a strong LB corp and he gives his all for Tennessee, so he's ok by me.
On the other hand, Bituli looked great. He was fast, had good range, and was disputive at times. He's got the speed and instincts to be a really good LB for us.
I would say jumper played decent to good, all the bickering about him making tackles down field is just funny, do some of you guys ever think about the fact that he was the one making the tackles down field? No one else was! Besides butuli, where were the other 9 guys at most of the night? I'm not saying the other 9 didn't contribute, but jumper and butuli was all over the place. Some, act like none of the defensive line missed any tackles or didn't get ran through. It's always just jumper being ran through. The defense as a whole didn't play great at all, but to just single out one player is rediculous, as he had a pretty good game considering the type of offense they faced.
