Y'all, hoe cake is cornmeal pancake. You take a thick cornmeal batter and you cook the cakes on a hot clean hoe. It's field food.

Now, Tennessee BBQ, white beans, and hoe cake are meant to be eaten together. In the '70s, there was a BBQ house just east of Nashville proper that served perfect hoe cakes. Mm mm, good!
