Billy Donovan to Magic . . . and back? (merged)

What a weird situation. It's seemed pretty obvious for awhile that Donovan was interested in jumping to the NBA; he's got to know that his stock will never be higher than it is right now; he gets a job close to where he lives now at a significant raise....and then he suddenly changes his mind three days later and wants to go back to college? Unless he's learned something really odious about the Orlando job in the interim, this just makes no sense. He shouldn't even know enough about his new job yet to know that he misses the old one.
It's the NBA. It's not like he suddenly found out the Magic is about to be put on probation or Dwight Howard is about to be academically ineligible.

I know, which is why it's hard to think that this is anything other than plain old indecision on Donovan's part. Which is difficult to believe, given that he's apparently been interested in the NBA for awhile. It took him three whole days to change his mind?

It's a strange situation. It would be amusing if Orlando decided to let him go, but UF decided not to take him back under the "he chose to leave" principle you cited. And if he does go back to UF, he's certainly managed to undercut himself pretty badly going into what promised to be a rebuilding project anyway.

Donovan's indecision has also given the shaft to Anthony Grant. Reports down here were that he had already started calling his VCU recruits and telling them that there was a good chance he wouldn't be there next year. He had better hope a really good job comes open for him next offseason, because his ability to recruit at VCU has been eviscerated.

This is absolutely crazy. BD has definitely painted himself into a corner with the Magic, UF, and former assistant Grant.

Sometimes u never knew what u had til u give it up and Donovan realized he was giving up an opportunity to be a college coaching legend but realized it too late.. i just wish the best for Donovan and i would really like to see him stay in the SEC so that we can take over as the best conference in bball also

Donovan might be damaged goods now. Sure, UF will take him back, but should he fall out of favor there, other schools and the NBA will think twice about hiring somebody who likes to renege on a contract.

Nick Saban's example of propriety notwithstanding...

You obviously didn't play baseball in East Tennesee in the late '80s.

You'd be wrong. Basketball season ends in February and baseball season starts in March. The seasons don't overlap. Its possible to play high school football, basketball, and baseball without missing any games.

Here's the TSSA high school baseball schedule for the entire state. I didn't find a baseball game on it that started before 3/8. The majority of them started on 3/12.

According to the TSSA calendar, the first official baseball game is March 12.

Foley is setting himself up to get jerked around for the rest of his tenure. On one hand he now has Donovan for life, on the other hand this could embolden Meyer to keep the feelers out for the remainder of his UF career.

Billy Munster will come back talking about how great UF is and he's couldnt leave, etc and UF wont skip a beat.

It's now official...Donovan has been granted his release from Orlando.

I hope he thought this through...he'll never get another shot at a job in the NBA.

well ok then....back to business as usual in the SEC....and you know, i got to expect that CBP is probably not all that disappointed. I think he really respected what CBD had done at FL, and really enjoyed going up against him....

Money can't buy everything.

Be a god in Gainesville.

Or a temporarily hot item in a city with limited interest.

It's not like UF is paying him peanuts anyways.

Easy call.

The 2007 calender has exactly what to do with schedules in the late '80s?

Basically like I was saying, high school baseball games are played in March, April, and May.

If your implying that the TSSAA have made big changes to the sports calendar since the 80's, I don't agree. The seasons have never overlapped, and they start appoximately the same time every year.

Its no different then the school calendar year. They make slight changes year after year.

The seasons do overlap. Any team that makes the playoffs in football have a season that bleeds into basketball, the same with basketball and baseball. I also don't see how having a start date of February 20 instead of March 8 would have constituted a major change. That said, as often is the case in these debates on this board, I don't have to think about what did or did not happen. I was there.

Easy call.
Yes, and he managed to make an irrevocably stupid decision. When Florida returns to its pre-Horford, Green, etc. level, and they will, the idiocy of this decision will be clear even to Billy Munster.

Why is it stupid for a man to prefer a situation that he is happy in?

Well sure, noone stays on top forever. But it's going to be a few years. The school is riding a recruitment high like noone else right now. Back to back hoops, football, like it or not, they are white hot in terms of recruiting athletes of all kinds right now.

It may still be a football school, but it's certainly not a black hole like it was a few years ago. Some guys just really like the college game. So even if they cool off and he gets run out, another school will snatch him up right away.

He's got great options, a high quality dilemma if you will. It's hard to make a "stupid" choice in this scenario, because the worst case is still pretty darn good.

If they're that hot in recruiting, why is Patrick Patterson in Lexington? Donovan is a good coach riding the wave of having hit the lottery with one recruiting class. You cash in when you're hot. If you make a decision at 42 that essentially locks you into a situation for life, you've made a bad decision.
