I preface this post by saying this is an unconfirmed rumor, so take it with a grain of salt. I was told yesterday by a friend with pretty good connections to the athletics department that Billy Gillispie will not be retained as coach after the season. My source said it had nothing to do with the on-court product, meaning it has everything to do with off-court issues. He also said that the main focus of the coaching search would be John Calipari.
Rumors surrounding Gillispie have been well documented on this site and others, so I find it totally plausible for a firing/resignation to occur. I’m not saying I think it will happen, just that I won’t be shocked if it does. I also posted a few weeks back about rumors involving Alex Legion’s departure and said then that if Mitch Barnhart did confirm those rumors as fact, he has probably already told Gillispie of his postseason plans.
I reiterate again that this is all speculation and my source on this isn’t one I would consider 5-star, but he’s been right about some things in the past, so it bears monitoring as the season progresses. And before you start with the comments that I’m just trying to stir something up, I mention that the purpose of this site is twofold: 1) to provide insight, humor and analysis into what does happen, and 2) to pass along what we hear about things that could happen.

I cant beleive they would put themselves in that situation again. Not that they arent fanatical about their basketball, but we are talking some serious coin and having to dish even more out for someone else, in consecutive years no less. I would be surprised, but you never know.

Did he even ever sign the contract?

Yeah, it was something different and at the moment I can't remember the logistics, but technically he is under contract.

Edit: He's binded by the Memorandum of Understanding he signed...just going to make it harder and involve even more legal issues if he is to leave or be fired.

They wanted him to quit drinking and dump his 20 year old girlfriend. Not kidding at all, it's pretty crazy.

Probably the worst thing they could do unless you can get someone like Calipari. Don't really see why he would want to leave Memphis. Good recruiting base light compitition. What Kentucky needs is stability, but what do I care if they blow the hole thing up!

I have heard it all.....I hope Billy Clyde sticks around, but Rex's scenario is not entirely unbelievable. I have heard from very reliable sources that he has missed a practice or two. Who knows?

It repulses me that we have reached a time where a coach can't have a few drinks and a 24 year old girlfriend. Damn puritans.

The hypocrisy is overwhelming....a town where the economy is based on selling bourbon and horse racing can't have a head coach that imbibes?

This would be a wild turn of events after all that happened just to get him to KY. To throw more fire on this, and this is just a left field though, what if Knight's sudden resignation is in anyway connected to this rumor of Billy G leaving. Would KY want an older Knight? How crazy would that be? Probably way off base but heck it's Kentucky and strange things have a tendancy to happen with them.

If I were LSU, I'd be checking the veracity of these rumors. If they're true, I'd have a plane sitting on the runway in Lexington as soon as the 'Cats make that mistake. I'm sure the folks in Baton Rouge aren't concerned about Billy Clyde's choices in beverages and female company.

Cal wanted to go their last season. UK and KU are two places in the college game that he has said numerous times he would like to coach at.

I think if he were given the right oppurtunity in the NBA he would take another swing at that as well.
