Bill King is the Phillip Fulmer of talk radio. He is old school and does not adapt to the ever-changing world of college football. Athletes these days are looking for something sexy. Kiffin is the type of coach that will allow UT to become "popular" again. In other words, he would be more likely to open up spring practice, like Florida did, to ESPN cameras. This is where King and Fulmer have been passed up. Bill King touted others for the job, mainly those who have had head coaching experience in college football (Kelley--whose interest in UT lessened when the Notre Dame soap opera came about, Todd Graham at Tulsa--who may have never been in the fold at UT). It seems that he feels that you have to go thru the same coaching mill that other, older coaches have been thru. You know the type where you have to spend x number of years as a position coach, then so many years as a coordinator, followed by this number of years as a lower divison coach before you can even smell a big name school's head coaching position (See Urban Meyer, Bob Stoops, Mark Richt as folks who did not follow this model). OLD SCHOOL!!! Seeing the reaction of players with whom Kiffin has met with, I don't believe that they would have reacted the same if Kelley was sitting in their living room.
Mike Hamilton understands what Tennessee needs, someone who is a relentless recruiter (as we have seen by Kiffin's mind-blowing travels) and someone who could sell the program. It will be important to have a coach who makes great decisions. I believe that Kiffin has worked for great X's & O's coaches (Pat Hill, Jeff Tedford, & Pete Carroll) and has been around the game forever because of his dad. Even though his stint in the NFL was short, you could see he was as successful as someone could be with the Raiders and Al Davis. I believe that Chris Mortensen's words about how structured and well thought out Kiffin's practices were at Oakland prove that he is a great manager of a program. He has proven he can recruit big time athletes. He just needs to prove that he can manage a major college program as the CEO. I believe that his experience in Oakland will allow him to do fine as a CEO of Tennessee Football. We will see his management prowess once his staff is introduced and he allows the coaches to coach while he manages the decision making for the program.
As a Nashvillian, I have grown tired of listening to Bill King and Joe Biddle (Spurrier jock sniffer) on 560 am. My only wish is that Free Beer and Hot Wings was broadcast in the afternoons as I have nothing really to listen to. Plaster and crew do nothing but talk about the NFL (I hate that John McClain guy and his lispy, whispy gay voice) and try to hide their loyalty to Vandy. Thom Abraham on 106.7 the fan is ok to listen to, but sometimes he gets on my nerves. He does cover more of the UT stuff, so I do listen to him more. I wish satellite radio would broadcast Basilio, so I could listen to his show like during my UT days.
