Biggest Win In Tennessee History

1)The 98 Florida game. Neyland was electric. Even got a little piece of turf.
2)Miracle at South Bend (Best 2nd half in UT history)
3)85/86 Sugar Bowl (nuff said)
4)98/99 NCG (Hard to believe that anyone would rank three games above the 1st NC in 50 years. It was a huge win, but, for me, it didn't have quite the same excitement those others did. I think that is what's wrong with college football today. It's NC or bust. I remember how exciting it used to be to play in the Sugar Bowl. After that game, UTs fans became a different lot.)

how in the world can it not be the 98 nat cham game over fla st. ?
Because I expected us to win that game. The 86 Sugar Bowl, OTOH, I seriously thought we would get run out of the stadium, so that win is by far the biggest, and most thrilling of my lifetime.

Of course the biggest win is the '99 Fiesta Bowl:

:finger3: you Fla. State

One of the most underrated wins, IMO, is '79 Notre Dame in Knoxville. They were two years removed from a Nat'l Title and we had just lost to Rutgers the week before. I believe that's the first time we tore the goal-posts down, IIRC.

'82 Bama
'98 Florida
'99 FSU

The win at UF during the '01 season was negated by the crushing defeat the next week.

Miami '85

Can't pick just one.

'85 Auburn game they were ranked #1 with Bo Jackson. Chanting "We Want Bo!" after he left in the 3rd Qtr.

'86 Sugar Bowl - Miami talking trash and not taking us seriously. Ha! 11 sacks (maybe I added a few over the years)

Early '90's Bama game when Peyton whupped their Azz starting on the 1st play - 80 yd TD to Kent. Most satisfying game from start to finish!

'98 FSU National Championship.

has to be the Miami '85 Sugar Bowl, we were not suppose to be in that game.

I would have to go with either Bama 82 or Miami 86.

Though FSU in Tempe was, of course, a national title, so has a special place.

But Bama 82, when we finally sealed the deal with Terry's pick in the endzone, man that was sweet.

Miami 86 was absolutley nuts. When Jeff Powell hit that hole for 60-some yard TD to put us up 28-7, you knew it was over.

Pandemonium reigned.

The thing I remember most about that game is Miami flying down the field on the opening drive and Vinny Testaverde hitting Michael Irvin for a TD. I thought we were going to lose 50-0.

Really? I thought we were gonna win.

I guess that's the difference between you and me.

Man, I just re-watched the youtube vid of the 82 Bama game. I had forgotten how Chuck Coleman simply took over the game during Tennessee's last TD drive in the 4th quarter.

Tennessee vs. Alabama 1982 - YouTube

And how about scoring two straight 2-point conversions with the same play?

lol

I doubt that's the only difference.

At the moment, it's the only one that matters. You thought we were gonna lose, I thought we were gonna win.

It's telling...

I would have to start with '82 Bama, because UT was a floundering program in the late 70's/ early 80's. That sort of got it started for the run that lasted over 20 years with just a couple of down years.

The '86 Sugar Bowl was a fantastic win. The '86 season that followed failed to live up to expectations but that's ok. Still ended with a bowl win over Minn.

The '98 UF game was the loudest I can ever recall that stadium. UT wasn't that great on offense, but did just enough to win. The O became a real threat later in the year.

The '99 Fiesta Bowl should be #1. It would be except that FSU was playing their back-up qb. I know he had 1 game under his belt (UF). Regardless, you take a NC game win however you get it.

For me it was the 98 Florida game because of the buildup. Those of us who were into UT football in the 1990's witnessed a team that could and did beat everyone except Florida. Not matter how hard they tried they just couldn't do it. I remember 95 being up 30-7 and still lost. I remember Spurrier with the UT and Citrus comments and Fred Taylor saying "they know they can't beat us." Every year it was " Can we get into the NC even with the loss at FL and can't we play FL later so we can beat them?" It was just so sweet to be at home that night and watch Al Wilson who -you could tell in his eyes wasn't going to let them lose. They way it was won was awesome, but the combined with that they finally did it and went on to win it all made it that much sweeter. Ah the memories- maybe again one day!

98 FSU - "National champion is clad in big orange"
98 Florida - "no sir-ee, pandemonium reigns"
95 Bama - Joey Kent touchdown on play number one" "Nobody even knows who has the ball...except Peyton Manning. He's got the ball. And where is he? In the endzone"
86 Sugar Bowl
