Biggest "What if" moments in Tennessee History

I wonder if they flew over there. The interstate system wasn't even built yet. I doubt the entire team made the trip. Meanwhile, the Trojans could ride bikes to the bowl game. Cross country travel back then surely sucked. It's not like today where I can have breakfast in Memphis and lunch in LA.

I read once that they took a train to LA.

I also read that Cafego missed the train, even though, as one poster pointed out, he was injured.

He was there. I read a story about him being pissed about his inability to dance with the California girls.

Too bad it couldn't have happened in 1942, when the game was played in Durham.

They went by train, and only about half the team made the trip.

Yessir, the 1939 Vols didn't give up a single point until the Rose Bowl, when they inexplicably lost the Rose Bowl to the USC Trojans.

In 2005, USC recognized their 1939 team as national champions.

It wasn't inexplicable at all. USC was also undefeated, albeit with two ties, and had played a much tougher schedule. Add in the fact that the best player in the country in 1939 (Cafego was the No. 1 pick in the 1940 NFL Draft) was hobbled with an injury for UT, and it makes sense that we lost.

USC in 1938 did the same thing. Duke came to the Rose Bowl unbeaten and unscored-upon, and USC beat them 7-3 on a touchdown pass with 40 seconds left. That touchdown won 11-0 Tennessee the 1938 national title in many ratings systems.

USC's 1939 team did win several rating systems, and their claim to the title is recognized by the NCAA, as is ours for 1938.
