Is elite speed at the skill positions. Was evident last year and again yesterday. Coleman is the second coming of John Kelley but he’s not a threat to house one. Chandler is that guy hopefully. Same for the WRs. We have what looks like 4-5 possession receivers. No one could stretch the field or break a long one. Hopefully some speed starts to show itself w more downfield passes called. Same for DBs although some of that is technique from the younger guys. But Buchanan, Abernathy and Warrior were in chase mode all game.

We’ve got to address that in recruiting/juco/grad transfers. We’re were just not good enough to go an entire game without any big splash plays and still score a decent amount.

I think we could've done more with our WRs even without having elite speed out there. JJ was absolutely manhandling the WVU DBs every time he got the ball. So was Calloway.

Now the DBs are another story. I think the staff is recruiting like crazy there because an upgrade is dearly needed.

I thought offensively, Helton was rather conservative. I’ve seen enough of WR screens to last me, especially if you’re not going to pump and go on one. Our DB’s made me sick, 20 yards off the receivers. I could complete a pass to them. I know they was overmatched but I’d at least like to see them in their face fighting them. A passing game is timing and we did nothing to change it.

The biggest thing we are lacking is confidence in the system. You can’t go fast if your not sure where you are going. WVU had that confidence and were playing with their ears pinned back.

True, receivers that can stretch the field, make big plays and of course take it to the house.
WV had 3 big fast receivers that we were just unable to cover
While Callaway is the closest receiver we have to the 3 that WV had...... We need big receivers that can go up and get the 50/50 balls like WV

The Vols lack big play skill position players, Calloway is the closest that we have

I agree about the lack of speed and quickness on defense. It seems the Vols get there with the lastest and the leastis. I remember that even in the mediocre years decades ago, the Vols were known for their speed.

CJP:”Speed is overrated”

Tennessee doesn't have enough speed and talent on defense yet. Hopefully that will be fixed by Coach Pruitt and his staff's strong recruiting.

Im gonna need some help understanding, as i often do. This the 3rd or 4th thread talking about speed, yet our prematurely crowned HOF coach said speed is overrated. What gives?

I would say the biggest thing we are lacking are talented players and an elite staff.

The offensive and defensive lines in particular have been embarrassing for the better part of a decade now dating back to the Sullins starting under Lane.

Didnt see anything schematically yesterday that impressed me from the staff.

Even Larry Scott managed to put one good drive a game together last season.

Not sure what the reasoning was behind hanging the inexperienced DBs out to dry repeatedly yesterday. The modest pressure sure wasnt affecting Grier in the least.

Always need speed but I thought DL was biggest concern. Only time Grier’s uni was close to the turf was warmups. Gonna need some LB blitz packages to help

We are not controlling the line of scrimmage, until we do that consistently, we will struggle to compete.

Speed is overrated if you have players that do most anything else well. When they aren't much stronger, much more athletic, fundamentally elite, smarter or can keep the man in front of them then yeah speed matters. Some of it yesterday were players just being in the wrong place and leaving guys wide open. Our group is also used to just being porous on defense as well.

Sounds revisionist to me.
