LOL at Devrin Young. Good chance he'll redshirt, and he'll never make an impact on offense. He could be a good returner, but it's a different animal in the SEC.
The sleeper people are going to say "Wow, what a great pickup!" is Jordan Williams. If he bulks up to 270 like he can, he MIGHT be able to get 10 sacks by his junior year. From the film I've seen, he's a nightmare.
What's your knock on Young......size? Or are you one of these star chasers and Devrin doesn't have enough for you? True he may not make an impact early but I think he has a very bright future as a return specialist and maybe even a 3rd Down back who can catch the ball out of the backfield.
Just hate the pickup. He isn't going to play RB. He doesn't have the size, and no, don't give me the MJD comparisions. Drew is 210. Young is 160. Not too mention he won't make an impact as a pass catcher.
He can be a good returner. But look at Marlin Lane returning punts. It's more impressive than Young's film returning punts (at least in making moves). I don't buy the competition he played to make those awesome moves. Go look at Chris Donald dominating in Huntington.
Trust me, I'm not a star gazer. I think they can give you some insight, but too many factors to just soley base off them. I think offer lists are way more important. Plus you can look at film yourself with most players now.
Plus...look at our numbers crunch. We are stuck taking a maybe good returner when we could have much better players at much more important positions. Yet we can't dump him because how close it is to NSD and he's a local kid. Plus we didn't need a returner. If this was year four of Dooley, and we were fine in depth, sure, I'd be more okay with the pickup, just like what Meyer did with Brandon James. But we don't need him.
Ah, but Urban Meyer signed James (lower ranking than Young according to ESPN) in his second year. Of course, they also signed Harvin, Spikes, and some Tebow guy....but damn. James was a key contributor.
And that's what it boils down to. Contribution. Auburn had what? A team consisting of an all world QB, an all world DT, and a bunch of role players.
Hell, it seems like half of the recruiting battle is signing dudes who can contribute for four years. We've been losing that battle as of late. Quick glance at our ESPN signing class in 2009 (dudes who should be into pretty steadfast leadership roles next season), we've got nobody. Bryce Brown, gone. Darren Myles, gone. Nu'Keese, gone. Oku, gone. Askew, hasn't done anything, possibly won't.
One of the biggest players we missed last year, IMO, was Dennis Rogan. A senior guy who could've at least led by example on the field. Say all you want to about what he did off the field, but the guy was a solid when he ran through the T. He was an above average CB, and more importantly, he was a role player. He basically won the KY game in 2009. And instead of feeling fairly comfortable about one entire side of the field, we were left to wonder if Teague or Gordon could manage and lead themselves in a relatively inexperienced secondary.
What I'm getting at is, I don't expect DY to be all world. But people should really start putting premiums on kids that are able to get 4 yards on third and three, 5 out of 6 times, for four years.
Let's not forget that Zook had those teams LOADED before Meyer got there. We are not in that situation. James was a good pickup and helped out a lot.
I agree, but let's face it. We've had terrible luck. Three coaches in three years. One stupid car ride. Bad coaching/scouting. I don't think that's coincidence we haven't been successful with our highly rated players. You don't think Nuke, Bryce Brown, & Myles would have been contributors this year? I think they would have been.
Dennis Rogan would have been nice to have. It was nice to have Fulmer finally have an East TN player pan out for once.
And that won't be Devrin Young. Look, Tom Smith is that guy. And I love that pickup. Great job by the staff getting him. Young (in my opinion) won't be a contributor on offense. He isn't going to play defense. Don't you think we could have used another TE/DE/LB/CB instead of a "returner"?
BTW, thank you for being cordial in your response. Usually if someone doesn't like the DY take, it turns to a **** storm. :hi:
Well I mean, I don't know yet if he can contribute. It's hard to tell. But the guy is extremely explosive. Look at his stride. Maybe dude is clutch and a hard worker. These are things you can't tell from a highlight tape.
Gotta agree, I am really hoping his explosiveness and highlight reel he had every Friday night can carry over to UT. With him being a local kid , many may think he can't get it done. I would love to see a kickoff or punt return for a touchdown, I can't even think of the last one we have had.
