Who do you think had the greatest effect on music? What band/person led music into the growth of genres it has become?

For American music, go back to ragtime, jazz, blues and swing. Scott Joplin, W. C. Handy, Fletcher Henderson, King Oliver, Count Basie, Jelly Roll Morton, Benny Goodman, etc. all got the ball rolling for what we have today.

The Beatles

The Rolling Stones

Elvis

Led Zeppelin

Jimi Hendrix

Black Sabbath

I think pretty much every variation of rock and metal has been a derivative of these 6.

Can you be considered one of the biggest musical influences of all time when you are basically just doing a slightly different version of something that was already being done?

Those guys weren't pioneers, but they helped catapult the genre of rock to its unseen heights.

I think the question was about personal musical influences. You take away the "I think pretty much every variation of rock and metal has been a derivative of these 6," comment (which is not accurate at all), and that probably describes a big chunk of VN.

I guess I read that not as a question of personal influence but on music in general. Probably just semantics but I just had a slightly different interpretation of the original question.

Two that are often quoted as influences but kinda under the radar include

Can
Big Star

That Big Star documentary that is out now is pretty fascinating.

Also on the list for specific genres would include bands like the Replacements and Green River. But there will always be someone who comes along that says there was someone before them in those areas too.

Haven't seen it but will look for it - been listening to some Alex Chilton recently; he's quite the guitar player.

Eagles
Prince
MJ
Madonna
Bad Company
Queen
Nirvana

I think that covers a few of the more modern ones and some criminally underrated ones.
