The only stat you need to look at from the game against Florida State is the number of points in the paint. The was the stat which FSU had a clear advantage. We are not able to get any points in the paint. We definitely could have used DJ Burns. It is too bad he transferred. He is averaging 12 ppg for Winthrop. We need those in the paint 12 ppg !

To say the "only stat you need to look at" is points in the paint is incorrect. Yes, the inside game is a concern, but turnovers and sloppy play are big factors as well.

If Turner hits some of his layups then we have points in the paint. He just had a really, really bad game.

I don't consider "lay-ups" as points in the paint. I think the poster you were responding to meant much like I do that points in the paint come from "inside play" not driving from outside.

That game showed coach Barnes the issues he is going to face this upcoming season and the fact that he has a month to improve before SEC play. I think JJJ has a lot of skill. Its just getting his confidence built up. They need to set more plays for Pons around the basket. Can't hesitate. Have to be decisive whether your going to drive, pitch out or take the 3. Fla. St. was quick and a good defensive team. Every Vol player got a wake up call.
We have to have 2 or 3 contributors coming off the bench. The Vols play tough D and that takes a lot out of them over the course of the game

This will not be a team matching stats opponents in the paint. No offense on the backline. The guards will need to dominate, hit the 3, drive the ball and make free throws, score transition points and low turnovers. Villanova style. Better develop this style quick with 2 more 5 star guards coming in next season.

So why did former players Walker and Burns transfer? -They are desperately needed in this year's rotations-if you saw there was going to be a glaring weakness in the 4 and 5's why wouldn't you as a coaching staff have tried to keep the both of them. Kent was talked up in preseason but we see where that went. Physical Post players in the 6-8" to 6-10" range are hard to come by here at UT in the past 5 years. Alexander was a big but he still was wasn't what we would call a PHYSICAL presence. When Burns and Walker committed I thought we may had broken that cycle. Next years class brings in a small forward and a couple of guard wing combinations-no true physical presence. Coach Barnes does get Plasvic next year-but they need a second in case of foul trouble-hopefully they get a commit from a big this year. Shame JJJ isn't 6-8 or 6-9 he has the body and the skill set to be a good rebounder . Great effort last night trying to finish last night no quit in the volunteers. Game number 2 in the tournament today go out redeem your self Vols Basketball

They had Plasvic penciled in for THIS season. He would jam the middle, block some shots and be 5 hard fouls inside. NCAA foiled that one.

Really bad roster management. Burns and Walker not working out and wasting a schooly for three years on Kent has left them paper thin. t

Fulk would be great as a four.

Oddly, I don’t see a lot of offensive adjustment. They need to be screening for Bowden on threes and they aren’t.

Nothing like a 3-point loss to bring out the true couch coaches and the posters who have been begging for any situation to arise to throw barbs at Barnes. Between winning 30+games, recruiting multiple 4 and 5-star players, and starting the season 5-0 with a top-20 win on a neutral court, those opportunities have been few and far between. But now we get to hear all about how they don't move the ball, they dribble it too much, and Barnes can't coach, manage a roster, and recruit properly. As sure as the day is long...

I do agree how he meant it, but that is not how the stats track it.

In my opinion, one of our biggest problems is our bench, but that will get better as the season goes on with more games played. I like what I see out of Oliver, Pember, and especially Gaines. Jalen johnson, however, with his FOURTH year in the program, plays 2 minutes and has back to back turnovers on offensive possessions. Inexcuseable.

Guard shooting and guard turnovers. Our guards had a come apart at the beginning of the game and the game was over.

Our guards shot 9-24.
Our guards had the majority of our turnovers.
Our guards had 3 freaking assists. The team had 5.
We played Street all and that isn't our game

We going to see any more of Pember on Wednesday? He's the only one on our team without a turnover and he's shooting 100% from 2 point range.
I sure hope so, I was confused on why he did not play against VCU. He's been playing almost as many minutes as johnson the past couple of games before that, but in the end I trust Barnes.

Pember and Gaines need to play. They have potential to be legit solid bench guys by seasons end. I think about Gains stepping up and hitting those free throws at the end of the Florida State game. You could see it in his eyes that he wasn't gonna fail. Jalen Johnson was probably on the bench thinking, I'm glad that's not me up there.

Barnes said it was just the way VCU plays. Drive drive drive (reason Pember missed) tifwiw
