I think that he was the top target the entire time personally. Currie played haslams card and screwed the pooch, now he's in real trouble.
He's not. He's always been Currie's first and top choice. There are much better options but Currie was dead set on Schiano for some damn reason.
First, Schiano wasn't a 3rd rate coach. Second, I don't think anyone here, myself included, can claim to know how Currie conducted this coaching search. But some of us are hellbent on acting like we know. "It was the Haslams!" "It was Currie!" "It was all a Gruden smoke screen!" "There was never any search!" "They ignored this coach." "They never reached out to that coach." Yeah. Whole lot of that going around.
Is this what we are now? We can only attract 3rd rate coaches? Now how do we get a step down from that? What's going on with our program?
I'm not a fan of Colin Cowherd, but he put it perfectly:
Herd w/Colin Cowherd (@TheHerd) on Twitter
The SEC is becoming toxic for coaches. The expectations aren't just high, they're damn near unattainable. Why do you think Chip Kelly took the UCLA job? The Florida job is MILES better.
Mark Richt is the perfect recent example of the toxicity he alluded to. 145-51 as Georgia's head coach, and never missed a bowl game. Fired after going 10-4, 12-2, 8-5, 10-3, 9-3 in his last 5 seasons. That's ludicrous.
Obviously Georgia got lucky and ended up with a good one in Kirby Smart, assuming he isn't just winning with the cabinet full of talent Richt left.
We'll never know, but I would love to find out how many coaches said no before Schiano, assuming he wasn't just a Haslam shoe-in, which it appears he may have been.
Seeing a ton of this in this thread. My question for all of you is this: do we know this is true? Are we sure? Has it been credibly reported or is it just a convenient truth that allows us to THINK we are still able to attract top-tier or even upper middle-tier names?
Is it true that Haslam wanted to bypass every clearly better candidate out there to land on like the 30th best candidate (if that)? Is it true that our reported "efforts" to hire Jon Gruden, Dan Mullen, Scott Frost and others were smokescreens to make it look like they were trying and cared?
Or is this us as fans (myself included) insisting that our program is something it's not? Do we need to face the music? Are we sure we're as great as we think we are?
Someone educate me on this. I am not attempting to argue with anyone. I also still want to believe we're a top 15 or 20 job in the country. But are we sure we haven't just been turned down by everyone?
Why was this guy considered: He was not a head coach, a co-defensive coordinator
: Record at Rutgers and NFL was not good
: Claims to have gotten Rutgers in Big 10 but had a horrible
Big 10 Record
: Had to google him I never even heard of him until
yesterday

Schiano was not my first choice, but the guy has a good track record for producing winners at the college level. He had South Florida and Rutgers in the top 5 at one time. That shows that the guy can coach. He was also highly regarded by Belicheck and Meyer. Sometimes, all you can do is get the best guy available to you at the time.
