Biggest issue facing Tennessee football.

I do not intend to take anything away from what the defense did against two very one dimensional teams toward the end of the season. They kept us in two ballgames for sure.

This is not a dominating defense without some help up front. First of all our secondary still makes way too many run stopping tackles. If we have to blitz Ga and Florida all game next year to get to the QB, or if we have to keep sneaking our safeties up in run support it is going to put way too much pressure on our secondary.
 you can only scheme so much on defense, eventually you are going to get caught in a big mis match and you'll pay. At some point your front seven has to stop the run and allow your secondary to cover. it was a bad physical mis match, but the example couldn't have illustrated this better was in the GA/HW game. GA was rushing 3-4, getting pressure and dropping 7-8 in coverage. HW had no answer for that. and it wasn't great coaching or better schemes, it was just that they COULD do it. We can't do that right now.

Most immediate need:

1) Studs at DT, this will enable us to get some pressure without blitzing, and neutralize the threat of Teabag up the middle (on a side note... man I would love to have seen him try the fetal position through the one hole against Haynesworth and Henderson...)

2) Crompton to fill Ainge's shoes in terms of accuracy, and bring more to the table in terms of attitude and leadership.

If we do the above, we'll go at least 10-2 in the regular season and perhaps win the SEC or get to a BCS bowl.

Long term, we need:

1) Recruit at a high level, I'm OK with the "drop off" this year, its well documented why this has occurred and we had an absolute monster class last year.

2) Play with the heart every snap. Emotion, enthusiasm, killer instinct, heart and desire ultimately make the difference when all other factors are relatively equal. These things ultimately come from the tone at the top of the program, and are greatly facilitated by the great player leaders (Wilson, Henderson, Manning, etc.).

3) When defending the spread option - which we will see more and more of over the next several years, ATTACK IT, impose our will, and match speed with speed on the corners, stud DTs in the middle and some head hunters in the backfield). Incidently, we're 2/3 of the way there...

That is what the Tampa 2 is based on I believe is the ability of your front to put preasure on the QB without using a blitz.

and it only works if you have a D line that can get the job done on it's own. same thing here. if you have to bring 5 or 6 on a pass rush consistently, that's not good. you only do that from a situational standpoint, not as your overall philosophy.

Defence will be the best part of UT next year! They don't lose alot! Mayo? maybe and Ryan Karl! No one else that will hurt! We need more players like Karl! Not much talent....but TONS of Heart! Could you imagine what Heffney, Mayo, McDaniel would have done if they had HEART like Karl!!!!

UT needs a breakaway back and a bruiser back. Foster????? I like him, but not a game breaker, nor a power back!

Crompton, Stephens, Coleman ....either one will be OK at QB, but I would like a Duel Threat QB. Not a Pat White, but one that can move in the pocket and still throw for 250yrds. stephens may be the guy?!

Chavis is a GREAT DC! One bad year with 2 freshman starting in the secondary? No great DLine? Chavis has done a great job with what he had. freshmen as DB's is not like freshman in the offensive backfield. Offense is talent...defence is about POSITIONING and EXPERIENCE!

The cupboard is full for the next 3 years! JUST GO GET A RUNNING BACK...maybe Creer can be the guy!

Ok you guys are right, we do need a STUD up on the front D line, Does anybody know if John Henderson has any eligability left.....But for real John Chavis needs to make a staffing change on the D line coach or they need to steal some big recruits from someone...

1. If you are going to continue reciting the game maxims, make damn sure you put them into practice when you take the field.

2. Hire an OC with the future of college football on his mind, and with proven game planning and play calling skills.

3. Please god find us at least three quality D-linemen that want to be Volunteers.

4. Start working on fundamentals from spring through August. Not after the Bama game.

5. Expect greatness. Not competitiveness.

A dominating o/l and d/l and a kicker that puts it in the endzone 75/80% of the time.

How come we have all American hs offensive linemen who pass block as well as anybody but cannot run block? Do we only recruit ol who can only pass block <or> do we not coach them how to run block <or> does the type of plays we call make them look bad <or> are we using the wrong type of blocking technique (zone blocking vs. man on man) <or> WHAT???? It is amazing to me that we cannot run the ball better than we do. It is not the rb's. They might not be the best, but they are above average. There are no holes. It is obvious. But the question remains.... WHY????

You ask for a QB that can move in the pocket and then point out the least mobile QB out of our options? Coleman and Crompton are both plenty mobile enough. Stephens has lead feet.

One of the biggest issues for me is the giving up one the run so quick. I know Cut's gone, but we gave up on the run WAY TOO QUICK in some of the games we lost this season and even some of the games we barely won. I want someone that wants a 50/50 offense and even running it more than passing it would be OK with me. I also want a FB next season so our Zone Blocking works even better.

Actually in my opinion some of the biggest "issues" (which I read to mean "challenges") facing UT are the improvements being made at other schools. Seems to me that Florida and UGA are on a definite uptick, and even South Carolina and Kentucky are trying, as programs, to get better and be competitive. Hell even Vandy has shown signs of life over the last few years.

You have no control over what those programs do, really (except for occassional head-to-head recruiting battles). Its more a question of what you do relative to them that matters.

This year you won the SECE. It is therefore hard, objectively, to still maintain that UT is slipping relative to the rest of the SECE given that fact.

But it sure does feel like it.

Like I said, you won the SECE and that is objectively hard to argue with. I'm speaking subjectively when I say that it just feels like that UT is falling behind.

LAW our own fans have no idea if we are falling behind.

Who is our OC?
Who is our QB?
Who will stay?
Who is our RB?
Makes it really hard to judge your talent and coaching levels.

I really can't take someone's analysis seriously when he can't spell the best UT single season receiver's name correctly.
