Biggest Game? Good grief

Was there! It was such a great game!
We had to camp out overnight in single digit temperatures outside the Student Center to get our student tickets. After I got my tickets I went directly to my Circuits class. Got there about 10 minutes late. Walked in with my blanket wrapped around me holding my two tickets in the air for the class to see.

I have to roll my eyes at all of the hyperbole that we hear during sports broadcast. Today, near the end of the game,(between Mashack’s last free throws) I heard Jimmy Dykes (who I like) say “they said this is the biggest home game in the history of UT men’s basketball”,
Who would say this? Obviously not anyone who has been a UT basketball fan for many years. Why is this game so big? It’s not for a conference title. It will affect SEC tournament seeding, and likely NCAA tournament seeding. Otherwise it’s a regular season game.
What am I missing?
Completely agree with you. I thought it was a bad take by JD.

Jimmy Dykes is the hyperbole king. Everything is the biggest, best, most, etc. He has no middle ground or nuance in his vocabulary.

Was it a huge game? Sure. Anyone else could even maybe make the argument that Dykes was making and it might stick. But you hear him do it and it falls on deaf ears because the next game we play will be the "biggest game in program history" to him.
You forgot “elite“

I think it could be argued it was a big game, and a big win. Emotions sometimes cause us all to make statements. At that moment in time it could have been the biggest home game in recent memory.

The blue hairs were into it?
Surprisingly enough, yes. First half was very much “same as always” but second half, people were standing, yelling, shouting, cheering. First time that I can remember it being that way across the board.

I complain often about the blue hairs and how the home environment should be more electric, but yesterday there wasn’t anything to complain about. VolNation showed up and showed out, young and old.

To me, #2 Tennessee beating the undefeated #1 Tiger High back in 2008 was bigger. I thought after that game, Tennessee was ranked #1 (maybe for the 1st time ever)? If Tennessee can one day get into Final Four, that could be a bigger game.
Wasn’t a home game.

Well, name a home game you’d put ahead of it and settle the debate
2 I saw in person:

1966- Vols 69, #1 ranked and undefeated Rupps Runts 62. Runts went on to lose to Texas Western in the Finals. But to be clear it had no NCAA ramifications as UK was the only SEC team to go to the Tourney.

1996- Ernie and Bernie 102, Alabama 98. This game did have ramifications as both went to the Tourney.

But this one certainly ranks as o ne of the alltime greats.

I still have the 1977 Tennessee-Kentucky game in Stokely as the biggest regular season home game. Was for SEC championship (no tournament that year). Nationally known stars (harder to have with no internet) in Ernie, Bernie, the Twin Towers, Jack Givens. Place was packed with national media. Good guys won 81-79. Amazingly almost 50 years ago now.
I remember watching it on TV. Still remember to this very day what a war that was. And the balls own in that big blue rear end

Was at the Texas game in 06. I don’t remember both team’s situation but the environment I felt today I haven’t felt since then.
Best game I ever went to as well. Took my 14-year-old to his first Tennessee game that day. He's been a lock ever since. The atmosphere was unreal and so was the 15 point halftime deficit come back all the way through overtime.

He also said it was “the game of the year in college basketball.” A bit of hyperbole but I’ll take it. 😎

I'm a 75 yr old total blue hair with terrible knees. When that shot went down, I sincerely think I got 36 on my vertical as I high fived my 13 yr old grandson!
What an incredible ending.
You gave your all, and I salute you! Your grandson will have a precious memory of that, too.

It’s up there. Is it the biggest? I think it depends on if we get a number one seed or not. Just in the past couple years there’s been as big of games at TBA. When Kessler and Jabari Smith came to town, when number 1 Alabama and Brandon Miller came to town. Wasn’t as big of a game as the rest, but the atmosphere was electric for the Auburn game last year when Knecht took over in the last 8-10 minutes. Chris Lofton getting his number retired was a big game, we just lost. Idk that’s just off the top of my head thinking about recent years. I’m biased because I went to most of those games, but like I said. I think it all depends on if this game does lead to a number one seed

Gotta be honest. There's a lot of things to fret over in the world today, but what comes out of the mouth of a sports commentator ain't among 'em.

I gotta agree with this. This one was huge but we’ve played a few in my lifetime that were huger at the time, as I remember it.
