I view it primarily as an accounting problem. Spending driven. Because until you get that under control revenues are mostly meaningless and covering up the root issue in my opinionOne more follow up.
Fiscal conservatism to me is spending and borrowing. But some look at tax policy. Which elements does your fiscal conservatism include?
Proxy wars make certain people rich. I'm fiscal conservative, smaller gov, states rights. Rules out both major parties for me.Also now that I have time to type it’s some of my own views too. I’m a reformed war hawk and tire of the continual war. But on that I’d submit both major parties seem to have decided they love a good proxy war
I’m really more libertarian in my views now. My old party has changed and I have changed also. I know, I voted repubs in 2000. Regret ensued.I’m really more libertarian in my views now. My old party has changed and I have changed also. But damn... the libertarian party leadership is like the special ed class in school with all the internal arguing![]()
I don't like and am not a member of either party....For my 34,000th post, I wanted to do something grand and meaningful. Having not thought of anything neither grand nor meaningful, I decided to post a poll.
We come here to argue mainly. And we poke fun at the other side. Only a very few of us are absolute partisans forever devoted to party. I used to identify with Rs but not anymore. I don't think I changed; I think what the R stood for changed and the party kinda left me behind. I am a non voter (conscientious objector) but would gladly vote for someone who shared my ideas. If I was forced to vote at gunpoint this election, it would be for Jorgenson.
So, where do you REALLY stand outside of party or discussion? Choose all that apply.
is this a relatively new position for you? Were you once solid with one party?
Run. I'll.vote for you.I'm voting less for my party than against the radical leftist agenda of the other party.
I'm for 2A.
I'm for smaller government.
I'm against discrimination and for equal opportunity, but I also believe in individual responsibility (iow, don't blame others for your poor decisions).
I do not believe there is some grand, institutional conspiracy against minorities.
I'm against illegal immigration but for legal immigration, including streamlining it where necessary.
I'm against big social programs and generational welfare, and against just throwing money at problems.
I want to see the black community do better, but I believe it should involve a true emphasis on education, work programs, etc. There is also some introspection that the black community needs to do, particularly those of inner cities.
I believe everything should be done to bring more manufacturing back to the US. We need to diminish our reliance on China for goods.
China is not our friend.
While it is imperfect, the electoral college is the best method to make sure that middle America between the coasts is represented.
I'm for voter IDs and question the motives of anyone who is against it.
I am in favor of a decrease in defense spending. We need to stop being the world's police. Probably the biggest change to my political opinion in the last few years.
Are you in favor of decreasing all spending or only for decreases in defense spending?I'm voting less for my party than against the radical leftist agenda of the other party.

I initially chose that also but I couldn’t say it was accurate on the “I don’t agree with my party” part. I most likely agree more with the GOP platform than disagree but yeah I think the trajectories are diverging. But I’m not there yet.Agreed.
Interestingly, more people are voting for "i don't agree with my party but the other sucks worse". I didn't expect that. Also unexpected, no one has voted they agree with their party completely.
If economic inequality is your biggest concern you should be grateful for Trump and GOP. The wealth gap has shrank some for the first time in forever. I have posted the article numerous times. The FEDs report came out two weeks ago.Agree
Tax structure is hurting long term economic prosperity with too many breaks to the wealthiest
Economic inequality is going to be the downfall of the country
Healthcare finances are too complicated, should be simplified, and there should be a public option to buy into Medicare
End or at least reform the electoral college to equalize vote value for national office, inter and intra state
Curtail gerrymandering
Disagree
Law enforcement needs more resources, not less (and actually I think Biden and Harris would agree on that one)
Deregulation can be a good thing. Needs to be smart, but certainly has value long term
Environmental protections are misplaced and seem to target opportunity -- need a long term plan with incremental change rather than dramatic fixes that end up getting repealed in the next administration
While race relations need improvement, the black community and leadership needs to take more responsibility for how they seemingly reject ascribing a criminal culture to that community, but then promote the image when it suits them
I am young compared to most here, I started paying attention after 9/11. That got me looking at the stated goals of both parties. My parents vote R but never talked politics so I wasnt influenced much by them. As I looked into the parties I quickly saw that both say one thing and do another.
So even though I lean right I knew the Republicans didnt represent me.
First election i could have voted for was Obama 2 while I was in college, I was 17 for his first round. Was amongst an age group that saw Obama as God. But again his stated goals didnt line up with his actions. Particularly his "green initiative" stuff was malarkey. I was learning about this stuff in school and the professors always avoided addressing the specifics that I saw as bad. It was like they were glad to have a voice but didnt care that most of it was actually a net negative in the long term. It was the same thing they railed against oil/coal. Obama gave up on the long term battle for the short term PV, solar, battle. As that was supposedly the most important issue facing humanity I couldnt understand why they gave up on it out of the gates.
So pretty early on I was completely disillusioned to both parties.
So since I never had a candidate that mostly represented me and actually mostly represented their stated party beliefs I never could justify voting for either. It's like going to a restaurant ordering a steak, then making fun of your friend for ordering the chicken. And then you both get your meals and its soy-chicken and tofu-beef and continuing to harangue your friend for eating soy chicken despite ordering the chicken. While you eat your tofu-beef. No sense what so ever to it.
That general disbelief in either major party, and then the general one off nature of the smaller parties got me looking at the flaws in the system as a whole. What I found was that none of it is designed to do what people think it is, while also getting further away from the base document.
It's always bothered me about pretty much any political discussion.great analogy:

Nicely done.
