Beware: Something is going on at Mississippi State

They really haven't played anyone to this point. Their best win is against Arizona State at home, whose best win is against Baylor.
Arizona St was a CFP team last year, who almost (and you could argue should have) beat Texas. They lost Skattebo to the draft but returned a QB and some other players. They aren't bad.

That was last year though, they are unranked currently.

We need to TCB against MS. No excuse to lose to them.

I know, I'm just saying that while it is possible Arizona St was overrated coming into the season I don't think they're a bad team.

Arizona St was favored by 6.5 the week they played Miss St; we're currently favored by 7.5.

Agreed

I have UT winning this game comfortably if we aren't sloppy but we could easily lose if it is a similar performance like the arky game last year. The reality is that UT's roster is much better top to bottom than MS State.

They aren't bad for sure, but they are nowhere near a title contender this year. They lost more than Skattebo (who finished 5th in Heisman voting himself). They lost their 2nd and 3rd leading WRs. And Fautanu was probably their best OL last year.

But I don't think it's difficult to see the effect Skattebo had for them last year and how badly they have missed it this year. Raleek Brown has been a good runner for them, but he is nowhere close to the weapon that Skattebo was out of the backfield.

You have more insight about MS State than the majority of their fans that I have spoken with.

They're not good either. ASU hasn't figured out their new offense/personnel whatever their losses were. They're averaging under 30 ppg against the light part of their schedule. They're 11th in the B12 in scoring and total O. I'm not saying they're terrible... but would be surprised if they don't finish in the middle of the B-12.

Maybe most meaningful to the UT v MSU match up is that ASU is a BAD passing team. They average under 200 ypg. They have a good rushing O... that still isn't on par with UT. So MSU faces an ASU running attack coupled to the SEC's top passing O. That should bode very well for the Vols.

No, agreed nowhere near a title contender, but they're better than "Miss St hasn't played anybody."

Honestly, I wonder if Dillingham's demeanor that game week had a negative effect, and/or their staff didn't take that spot seriously enough and the players picked up on it. In his presser he made a comment that seemed to indicate he didn't know much about their use of cowbells, even though he coached for several years at Memphis and Auburn and they had cowbells ringing at their practices that week. Then he had some kind of complaint about the team hotel being further away from the stadium than is typical, and how that can throw guys off their routine. It was weird.

Probably the biggest knock on Ms St so far is that they are undisciplined. They are the 2nd most penalized team nationally. And this is with already having 3 non-conference games with SEC refs, so home cooking has been in their favor 3 of their 4 games. That's something I imagine we will take advantage of with some hard counts and throwing it over the top.
