11/26/2016 - Instead of Josh Dobbs fumbling at midfield, he goes on to lead the Vols into the endzone and the Vols end up beating Vandy. They go on to win the Sugar Bowl.

Butch Jones then signs a 5 year contract extension. Without the doubt of Butch Jones impending firing looming over potential recruits we go on to sign a top 5 class this year including Trevor Lawrence and Cade Mays, even after a 5-7 finish. I think with the Sugar Bowl momentum we end up winning an additional game this year that we didn't win.

So Volnation, if that scenario played out do you think we are in a better or worse spot at this point in time. Sugar Bowl victory last year, and a top 5 class - But Butch Jones is our coach for 5 more years. OR where we are now. Just goes to show you football is a game of inches and breaks.

That's only a question the staff and players can answer. They dealt with him daily. As a fan. IM GLAD HE GONE!!!! We will be ok for the better in the long run.

What if John Majors never had heart issues, how many Natty's would he have won?
The cupboards were loaded with NFL talent. He'd already won a NC at Pitt.

What if he had surpassed the General, what if ?

I think Butch dif some positives for the program but the 10 loses on 5 seasons against an inferior Floriba team 3 tomes. An overtime loss to A&M. A loss to Oklahoma. A 4 point loss to Arkansas. Losses to Vandy and USC.
I can not get those 10 loses put of my head even though recruiting got better and we won 3 bowl games

Isn't that the point of a message board, particularly in the offseason. What ifs and speculation?

IFS & BUTS
I believe you answer your own question with your statement. (Message board not conversation board)
OK I use the board for conversation too, but it's usually about real situations. Not ifs and buts.

What if Saban won at the Dolphins and stayed. There'd be a lot less fired coaches out there.

What if the Dolphins G M allows the signing of Drew Breeze to Miama? (1) Saban never coaches at Alabama. (2) New Orleans does not win Super Bowl. (3) New England wins fewer Super Bowls

Real situations, like 51 threads about Jon Gruden coming to UT. Got it.

What if Shuler wins Heisman? What if Manning wins Heisman? What if Cutcliffe stayed at Tennessee and does not go to Ole Puss. Eli plays for Tennessee and beats out Clausen and Clausen transfers? What if we had beaten LSU in SECCG and advanced to National Championship?

What if Tamar Smith hits that easy shot and we beat Michigan State to advance to National Championship and then play Florida for a third time that season? Do we get stripped of our championship by NCAA?

For me I am glad we are done with this awful read option and I think the players will have better coaches that can coach them up and we have alot more SEC experience now also. I think this will be what the Vols needed to get over the hump Butch took UT as far as he could go. The only way Butch could of kept going would have been to get better assistance and quite trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

What if Fulmer didnt lose to Wyoming and got another year and won 10 games in 2009.

What if we beat LSU in the SEC championship game.

What if Nick Saban never came to Alabama.

What if Derek Dooley was a good coach.

What if Pruitt is the next Saban.

See why I hate these threads? Cant change the past, theres no point in dwelling on it and saying what if. Lets move on.

We could play the what if game forever. What if we hadn't had too many men on the field when we beat LSU during the Dooley days? Would that have been a win that allowed Dools to stay?

Let's look forward.

Well none of those things happened in the last 5 years let alone 12 months. No need to comment if you do not want to. I never understood people commenting on things saying they hate a certain type of conversation.

The games Tennessee could have won under Butch that would have made his tenure different are almost endless!
2-4 per year! Hopefully PrUitT will get er done!

I'm good with where we're at.

We knew what LAJ was as a coach before that Vandy game.

True, so almost makes it seems to be a good thing we didn't reach the Sugar Bowl last year. That would have for sure bought him some more time. What a difference a year makes. How many people would have believed Fulmer would be AD and Pruitt would be coach if I had told you that this time last year?

Fulmer was fired the week BEFORE we played Wyoming

Tennessee lost a 11-1 season last year(11-2 after loss to Bama in SECCG) due to lack of fundamentals (ball security was terrible) but Oklahoma would have scored 50 easily on the Shoop 2016 defense. 11-3 would have been the best they could have done.

Has any team in SEC history gone from SECCG to 0-8 in one season?
