Better next year??

I'm tired of "getting better." I'm ready to win and keep winning. I miss the days of expecting to be SEC champions instead of hoping.

GO BIG ORANGE!

right on.....some how Michigan didn't take 4 years and they were junk prior, Brian Kelly had a spike at ND(now in the toilet), Jim Mc had no problem getting 11 wins his first year in Florida, Chris Peterson has taken Washington to the top of the pac 12 after decade of bottom feeders. Mark Richt has turned Miami around in just the first half of his first year. until we build depth(and should have much more than we have now in year 4) we wont improve over 9/10 games. In the 90's we had the superior facilities every other program has caught up. Butch has atleast some sexy back to the program that is drawing some kids in. The program was depleated when he took over, but when we are getting top 10 classes 4 years in a row year 4 and 5 should be conf championship years. We are in the mix and if we didn't shoot ourselves in the foot we would be 6-1 right now. Bama is the model we need to be just like they wanted to model us in the 90's. Butch is the right guy, but our OC needs to change he cost us a 11+ win season last year and the play calling has been subpar first half of the year. We need to stick with Butch he is the right guy, but so sick of hearing next year.

We will miss Barnett, Kamara, Dobbs, Sutton and JRM. We've already missed Sutton and JRM as the defense can't stop a runny nose. Barnett may end up being a top 5 pick and Kamara is at the very least a 2nd round pick with his versatility. Dobbs may or may not get drafted. Sutton and JRM should be drafted inside the 1st 2 rounds. Bottom line is these guys are the perfect example of who we want playing at UT. Great character people off the field and absolute ballers on the field. I know at least for me that they have all made me proud and I'm extremely grateful they chose to play for UT and they will be sorely missed. These are guys that will not be replaced easily and these young guys will have no choice but to step up like they are currently trying to do this season. Personally I feel like we take a slight step back but should still contend for the East crown. As this season has shown, anything, can happen in football.

I believe it is better, getting some depth has been CBJ's challenge and Achilles heal. Sure injuries happen, but the drop off in talent and experience is huge after the 1s. 121 should have better depth, at least on paper it says that, but that is how you get through the SEC or AKA.......the WRECKING ZONE.

We still have this year to finish. You ask about next year....next year. Right after NSD. When you know the names of those coming in, transferring out, opting for the draft, enrolling in barber school ect.

You asking this in October just shows you are giving up on this year. Are you another who questions if he jumped on the bandwagon too early?

If so, burn your Vols gear now, and pull your Michigan/ Florida State/ Alabama/ Texas stuff outta storage. We are gonna suck next year, so move along.

That was totally unnecessary and rude.
:nono:

After five years of top 5-15 recruiting classes, we should have quality depth at every position next year. While we're not going to be reloading 5*s like Bama, we should have the talent to compete for the SECE every year. Consistently winning a minimum of 9 games a year, with 8 wins in a down year and 10 or more wins in a good year, is a reasonable expectation for a program that has UT's resources. If we want to be elite, we need consistency-- in recruiting, coaching, player development and performance.

Kelly is the only RB anyone has mentioned -- who are the other RBs that will be counted on ?

Ty Chandler who is still in highschool in Nashville at Montgomery Bell Academy. He is like Charlie Garner or Alvin Kamara type of player.
Let him and Kelly split time on the field.

Gonna be hard to get better than 10-2. I personally don't think we win 10 reg season games next year.

I think we have a very good chance to go 10-2 next year. Our schedule is pretty easy again. We will most likely lose to UF and Bama on the road, but win everything else. We won't make it to Atlanta unless Georgia gets better and beats Florida.

We haven't thrown the ball remotely well in four years. JG could be a revelation in that department, and with Kelly and Ty Chandler and a very good OL, our offense might actually be better. Will need a new OC though.

Defense up front is where the concern is.

Why go with JG when we already have Dormady on campus and we know somewhat how he will play. JG is just an unknown and we think he is ALL WORLD because of his high school years.
Remember Dobbs didn't earn the starting job immediately? Going in to his sophomore season, we thought that he was uninspired and uninterested. Worley was selected to play over Dobbs.
We have the receiving corps on campus now, so why keep going with a running q.b.? Get a pro style player like Manning, Bray or Ainge and win some games by throwing the ball and running the ball.
I know that a q.b. that runs the ball is supposedly sexy and new but a run play will only get you a few yards, while a reception will get you huge yardage.

Does anyone think we'll be better next year? ala 1998? JG comes in and plays QB, John Kelly at Rb??

I believe we will be much better!

It all starts on the offensive and defensive lines. Our Oline will be deeper, stronger, and with a couple of current freshmen redshirting it will set up to get better every year after that, assuming recruiting stays good. The defensive line will be deeper and more experienced. Yes we lose Barnett and have already lost O'brian, but we bring back depth and with another year of weights and conditioning we should be fine.

My biggest concern is Linebacker, need more depth there. The defensive backs will be deeper and more experienced. We may not have as much starpower but we should be OK.

If our Oline is better our running game should be better, even without Kamara and Hurd, no offense to them. The fact they have done as well as they have is a testament to their skill and fortitude.

I love what Butch is doing with the program. Many are concerned about the recruiting, and there's no question we are not recruiting at Alabama's level. But we are getting better every year.

i think you could make a case for it. it still depends on how much better we can get on the O line and if we can maintain D line play. we'll miss Barnett immensely, and my only fear is that w/out him out there, it makes some of the other guys look like, well, just other guys.
That's my concern.with out him taking all the focus.

Reading this thread I know for sure if JG don't start.... epic melt down. The posters have set the bar so high for him he is almost bound to be a disappointment. Ala Kahlil and Kongbo people were raving about how they were going to destroy everyone. They are both going to be stars before they leave but I've seen some people calling them bust already. This is the SEC

Probably will get crucified with this question, we have a few seniors that should be drafted in the first 2 rounds. We have a few juniors that should be drafted in the first 2 rounds.

For sure JRM and Cam are gone (Seniors). Barnett is gone. He's for sure first round.

Kamara and Hurd COULD be gone.

The first 2 rounds of the draft are guaranteed money. After that the dollars drop off dramatically.

Based on what you have seen watching other teams, you could see both RBs falling into the 3rd and 4th round. NFL teams don't draft because they like a particular player more than another. Specific needs drive their draft picks.

Is 3rd and 4th round money enough to leave for?

Based on injurys this year, probably so but AlaBubba will have 6 players drafted in the 1st 2 rounds.

Are we that good?

All I'm saying, there is a chance 1 or 2 players we think is gone will be back.

Thoughts?

A lot of truth here

With the way Team 120 started the first 2 games (surprising), and with all of injuries (surprising), I think I've concluded I just can't predict how 121 will perform and hold up. Only Butch Jones knows, and he's probably not telling anyone just yet.

Florida and UGA will be down next year - without a bunch of injuries ut should dominate the sec east

1. I'll worry about next year starting in January. Football season is too short already, not giving up part of it to discuss something that can wait till after.

2. From this point on, EVERY year is a potential championship year for the Vols.

An improved offensive line would really help offset the growing pains we are going to experience at other positions, QB and RB chief among them.

Our front seven is going to be an area of concern next year. The interior of the defensive line should be fine with Tuttle and McKenzie anchoring it, but we are having to replace 2 good/great defensive ends and a senior tackling machine at LB.

Unless Kongbo emerges as a force, we are going to have a hard time generating a pass rush next year. I don't want to be hard on him because he's basically a freshman and still learning the game, but he's been absolutely invisible this year and I did expect more than that.

05 you are an idiot.

This. I miss expecting to win every game and even though I still appreciated going 10-2, 11-1 (who wouldn't?) it was a let down to not get to Atlanta
