Better "Big Game" coach: Pearl or Fulmer?

I'm not sure it's fair to compare the two...

Fulmer's coached the Vols in SEC championship games, bowl games, and a national championship game (not to mention big regular season conference games).

Pearl has faced ranked opponents in the regular season, but that's about it. He's been successful, knocking off teams like Texas, Memphis, Florida, Kentucky and Ok. St....but he hasn't coached in a championship game, or a sweet 16 game at UT.

Fulmer doesn't have a good record against top ten teams, and he couldn't win the big one against Florida for a long long time, and he blew it against LSU in 2001. So, I'm gonna go with a tie because Fulmer won a championship (even if he should have won more).

"a championship?"

He's got 2 SEC titles and a national title.

Ask me about this when we actually play in a big game environment in basketball (I have no doubt it will happen sooner than later). Not saying Pearl isn't a great big game coach, just that there isn't really a track record to judge him on yet.

I agree but to me the premise of this thread by TVA is just another attempt to take a jab at Fulmer...

Jury still OUT??? 2 versus 14 years. Apples and Oranges. (no pun intended) Pearl coachs different than Fulmer. His techniques are great for basketball but probably would not be as effective in football. Football is 14 games at the max basketball can be 30 to 38 games. Two to three days apart. 7 to 14 days apart for football. Two different creatures. Basketball affords more opportunities for highs and lows and peaking at the right time. Football is one and done. You can peak in football but it best be at the first of the Season and a coach must be able to sustain and control the enthusiasm at same time. I think Fulmer has the tougher job here. Give him credit.

Geez... one whole day?

:eek:lol: You are funny...every NCAA Division I basketball team plays around 28-30 regular season games...and then play a tournament...why wasn't Florida tired or worn out? How about South Carolina, they played a game the day before, if any team should have been tired/worn out it would have been them...

Our key players had to play alot more minutes and we had spent ourselves in the previous two weeks or so beating Florida. We weren't the same after that. Small bench, small team going against taller more physical teams.

Can't compare Florida's team to the Vols.

I never compared the two team, what I compared was the fact that both teams had the same amount of rest before the tournament...

16-0 at home was impressive. But look at the motivation techniques used. Benard King induction and Pat Head singing Rocky Top. Along with Peyton Manning in the Locker room before the Game for FL. Great Techniques but face it. It is harder to motivate a mob of 85 than it is to motivate or prepare a mob of 15.

85 vs 12...

Lose one player in football and compare that with one lost player in basketball.

Also, I will say the parody in the SEC in football is way more than the parody in SEC basketball...

Fulmer at the beginning of the 2005 season had better talent compared to his peers than Pearl did compared with his peers. Yet Fulmer goes 5-6 and Pearl (with less talent compared to Florida, Kentucky, LSU...) was able to thrive.

SEC Football is a big game every weekend. We have proven we can lose to MS, AUB, SC, LSU in basketball and still have big games left at the end of the season. But lose to any of these teams in the regular season and settle for the Peach or Music City Bowl.
