If you like smoke you need to find some Rauch Beir......(smoked beer) some call it "bacon beer"..... Schlenkerla Oak Smoke is my favorite or as the bottle says "Aecht Schlenkerla Eiche" it is from bamburg....it can be hard to find though.....

Easier to find now is Sam Adams, Cinder Bock Rauch Bock it will bet liquor stores being a bock it's 9% plus, it should be similar though in that it is also a smoked doppelbock. However the above German beer uses Oak which I prefer. You have to LOVE smoke to like this style of beer.

Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier - Märzen is probably the standard of bamburg smoked beers....it uses beech wood for smoking at is probably the most intense...but not for everyone.....Bacon Beer is a good name for it.

I've been into Knob Creek here lately, even the wife who is not a whiskey drinker likes it.
 
Just my nickel opinion. I also would have said Jack for a long time in regards to sour-mash....but I think it's world popularity and huge demand has somewhat worsened the process. It is now a very much mass produced whiskey. George Dickel has been beating Jack Daniels for me for awhile now, in Tullahoma it's still very much a slow process handcrafted affair. They're both old Tennessee Sourmash Whiskey's, and Lynchberg and Tullahoma are a stone throw away from each other... but Dickel just seems to have retained the traditional smokey flavor and process more. I don't know if they have changed the process at Jack or not, and if they did they wouldn't admit it, it just doesn't seem the same. I also have high hopes for the new "Chattanooga Whiskey" once they move in fully....but having done plenty of back to back comparisons among friends we agree George Dickel has taken the crown for the best traditional Tennessee Sour-Mash. I recommend the George Dickel number 12 in particular.

One aside about "single barrels" I'm sorry but this has always been to me more about snob appeal and a way to appeal to elitists, then any tradition on making good whiskey. Marketing wise for making money and charging more it's genius. However, carefully tasting your barrels, and mixing them to retain your signature flavor is NOT cheaper...it's how you keep quality control. The Single barrel shenanigans I'm convinced is more marketing then a recipe for good whiskey, most of the single barrels I have sampled tend to be a roll of the dice as to how good they are are, I'm much safer getting my money's worth with the traditional blend created by craftsman choosing the right barrels selectively. The snobs who like to brag at the cost of their liquor more then drinking it may disagree.....but I think it's hype.

I don't put all Whiskey's on the same page...sometimes you want a coke, and sometimes you want a Dr. pepper...whiskey shouldn't all be lumped together either...George Dickel #12 is my favorite Sour Mash....but I have other favorites too...


For Bourbon I would say my favorites are Booker's, Makers Mark, and Buffalo Trace just because it's a killer value for the money and not far from Maker's. On Booker's beware though those number are not a lie, this will kick you on your ***, it's 63%, also ignore what I said about single barrels above, in the case of Booker's all I can say is it must truly be their best barrels, maybe the one single barrel worthy of it's snobbery, I like Maker's Mark, because they set the standard, also they don't seem to have changed their methods despite demand, it's just good quality you can count on, but Buffalo Trace is so close, that I can not help but see it as a best value.

For Scotch, well I like sour mash so of course I like smoke...and the Peaty smokey flavor of Talisker wins for me hands down. Talisker and Rauch Bier make for my kinda drinking evening. Talisker is a excellent Scotch, and truth be told maybe my favorite of all Whiskey's but darned expensive..it's a special occasion drink for me. It is not made the same as any other scotch because it comes from the island of Skye, they traditionally didn't have a lot of coal, so they used the peat native to their island. Peat is basically hundreds or thousands of years of stacked seaweed dried out on land, they cut it out of ground and use for fuel, it gives off A LOT of smoke...and gives this Scotch a near Hickory flavor.

For the people who swear by Jack, all i can say is buy your self a bottle of George Dickel number 12, and test it back to back with ANY version of Jack. if you still prefer Jack you have not lost anything by the trial......so far I have converted many a Jack fan after they taste what a traditional handcrafted whiskey should taste like. Jack back in the day may have been on par or better, but not today. That Dickel is cheaper, is a great plus, I guess they don't have the same global marketing bill.

I agree about the marketing hype of "single barrel". But very few people can actually distinguish quality drink from horse piss, so you put horse piss in a fancy bottle, call it "ultra premium" and idiots rave about how awesome it is.

Jack is terrible. The Jose Cuervo of whiskey. Popular name, terrible product.

LOL I wouldn't be THAT harsh on Jack, it's mass produced but it at least is truely Sourmash Whiskey... Cuervo is grain alcohol with tequila flavor added unless you get their high end stuff. Jack I think is what it is...it's brilliant marketing, do you have any idea what a bottle of jack from Lynchberg goes for in China right now? Pure marketing....

I sometimes hate to share the Dickel secret cause I fear it becoming popular and thus ruined.

I am intrigued by your mention of Ardbeg I have not had that.....so it's another small Island Scotch? does it also use peat? Will have to look for it sometime, but I can already tell it is not in this weeks budget.....:)

If it is a liquid cigar....what cigar would you choose to compare it too ;)

I will admit I used to smoke cigars quite a bit, I never had the money to fully explore them though, but upon recommendations from a friend who could afford such things I found two of his I really liked and would get the Arturo Fuente 8-5-8 and the Onyx maduro's 4's or 2's...... I have given up smoking as a promise to the wifey.... I do miss it soo.....

Single barrels are overhyped amongst the vast majority of consumers. Doesn't mean some of them aren't worth it

Posting against my better judgement, as I don't in general support educating the public. Most people deserve being the victims of marketing over palate. I take beer and whiskey very seriously, and trust me when I say if you were to have put maker's or jack in this tasting they would have laughed and laughed. Don't get me wrong I love makers (for mixed drinks), Jack is a good standby for the same. But if I want to sip an American corn Whiskey....there's just no better then #12... I hesitated to post based on the fact I like my best of Tn cheap and underrated.....I only ask that if upon a back to back tasting you agree you promise not to share this fact with the heathen from other states unless related by blood or marriage.

out of those I like Elijah Craig the most (assuming the Four Roses you are referring to is the yellow)

I like Bulleit the least of those.

people are all about Eagle Rare... one that's similar that I like better is George T Stagg


If this Sat. game is like last week, what are your recommendations for better drinking than Four Roses? Finished Four Roses Small Barrell last Sat. but looking for something better.

I'm not a big fan of Envy. But I just sampled the Rye and its really good drinking.
 
This is an excellent and very informative thread. I am a big wine drinker, but enjoy whisky and am just beginning my scotch 'journey'. One of the guys at Total Wine suggested Aberlour A'Bunadh as a good one to keep in the liquor cabinet, so I've been enjoying batch 44. It is high alcohol and took some getting used to, but I am enjoying quite a bit now. I'm sure as my palate matures I will be able to try and appreciate better scotch (much as it is with wine), but I have to say this first foray has not been bad at all.

I have that bottle. It works well for me neat, with a few drops of spring water.
 
You need some quality shine then. I drink shine every football game. It's equally as helpful in celebrating a win as it is in drowning a loss away.

I tried the stuff from the Gatlinburg retail place (Smoky Mtn Moonshine?) and wasn't that impressed. Expensive also. Is there a legal option you recommend?

I had some Corsair Triple Smoke at Knox Mason last weekend and it is a fantastic choice if you like the peat/smoke of a good single malt.
