I kind of look back at the older days but for me it would be a toss up between Dewey"The Swamp Rat" Warren or Condredge Hollaway.
The Eric Ainge thread got me thinking. Who do you guys think was the best UT QB not named Peyton. I realize some of this will be related to our age and considering that the one QB I just love was Andy Kelly. Granted he was the qb during my teenage years when I lived football but the guy was just so clutch. I remember watching that comeback against ND when we were down 31-7. Just a great college QB.
i know where this goes in regards to the Tee Martin debate.
he was on the team that won the national title. we didn't win the national title because of him. he has a street named after him, that's about as far as i'm willing to go with it.
as far as the actual position of the quaterback, and how it is played, no, he's not one of the best quarter backs to every play here.
should he hold a special place in tennessee's history? the fans memories? sure he should.
but i equate Tee Martin being a "national championship winning qb" the same as i consider "trent dilpher a super bowl winning QB".
they were both on the team. they both played their part. neither were the reason they won at the level those teams did.
Shuler got me into TN football..i was in middle schoolClausen, and it isnt close. Look at the records and stats. Shuler was more talented than casey though.
Kelly was a fighter, but he had NFL receivers and every now and then, he would throw the ball DIRECTLY to an opposing DB with no WR even around. It was crazy.
No, he doesn’t.Does Tee get no credit?
I dont understand that at all. Somebody got some 'splainin to do.
No, he doesn’t.
Tony Robinson is the most talented Tennessee QB I’ve ever seen. Throw in Shuler, Clausen, Ainge, and certainly Dobbs before you get to a Tee Martin who played his role very well in 1998, but that wasn’t much more than an average QB at Tennessee and who belongs in the top 10 of all-time UT QBs, but not near the top 5.
But if the QB didn't get hurt Manning would have red shirted. Can you explain that?
I remember when I was younger and Shuler left early it made me so mad but it was a good thing if it got us Manning.Colquit had been beaten out by Heath. He was a 5th Year redshirt player and nobody expected him to finish the season. He was the starter because he was the one with experience. Todd Helton by that time had no intention of taking the punishment playing Quarterback and possibly destroying his baseball career. There was also Brandon Stewart at the time who transferred to Texas A&M when he realized he couldn't beat out Peyton.
Brandon Stewart was a better athlete than Peyton. Peyton was a better game manager And both learned on the job that year. Peyton won out. Had Colquit remained healthy I still thing Peyton and Brandon would have been in the running for Quarterback and would still have been playing. Neither was going to red shirt. Had Heath been on the team none of them would have got much of a look that year which is why Peyton made it a requirement of him signing with UT that Heath leave early.
