Best UT quarterback not named Peyton

Clausen, and it isnt close. Look at the records and stats. Shuler was more talented than casey though.

Kelly was a fighter, but he had NFL receivers and every now and then, he would throw the ball DIRECTLY to an opposing DB with no WR even around. It was crazy.

I kind of look back at the older days but for me it would be a toss up between Dewey"The Swamp Rat" Warren or Condredge Hollaway.

I wish I could identify the Offensive Lineman who yelled "Dewey...look out!" after a missed block. Swamp Rat apparently removed the turf from his helmet when he joined the next huddle and calmly requested a slightly improved result from the guys up front.

The Eric Ainge thread got me thinking. Who do you guys think was the best UT QB not named Peyton. I realize some of this will be related to our age and considering that the one QB I just love was Andy Kelly. Granted he was the qb during my teenage years when I lived football but the guy was just so clutch. I remember watching that comeback against ND when we were down 31-7. Just a great college QB.

Highly underrated as a QB. There were some really fun offenses to watch when he was here.

i know where this goes in regards to the Tee Martin debate.

he was on the team that won the national title. we didn't win the national title because of him. he has a street named after him, that's about as far as i'm willing to go with it.

as far as the actual position of the quaterback, and how it is played, no, he's not one of the best quarter backs to every play here.

should he hold a special place in tennessee's history? the fans memories? sure he should.

but i equate Tee Martin being a "national championship winning qb" the same as i consider "trent dilpher a super bowl winning QB".

they were both on the team. they both played their part. neither were the reason they won at the level those teams did.

pretty much the team that Manning didn't win one with :) so Tee is the MAN

Ya say Ya want a National Championship...…………….and T gets NO respect.
Read ALL the excuses on here for NOT putting him in the Hunt and the Mix.
He got done what Peyton and a Bunch of others didn't!
It also points out the utter stupidity of a Bunch of OVERrated QBs.
To win a championship, you need a Defense, an OL, a Running back that can get you 2 and a QB that doesn't turn over the ball.
That is the case from cutters to the Pros.
T Martin got it done. PERIOD.

Shuler got me into TN football..i was in middle school

Does Tee get no credit?
I dont understand that at all. Somebody got some 'splainin to do.
No, he doesn’t.

Tony Robinson is the most talented Tennessee QB I’ve ever seen. Throw in Shuler, Clausen, Ainge, and certainly Dobbs before you get to a Tee Martin who played his role very well in 1998, but that wasn’t much more than an average QB at Tennessee and who belongs in the top 10 of all-time UT QBs, but not near the top 5.

Lord, I'd love another Tony Robinson minus the injury.

But if the QB didn't get hurt Manning would have red shirted. Can you explain that?

Colquit had been beaten out by Heath. He was a 5th Year redshirt player and nobody expected him to finish the season. He was the starter because he was the one with experience. Todd Helton by that time had no intention of taking the punishment playing Quarterback and possibly destroying his baseball career. There was also Brandon Stewart at the time who transferred to Texas A&M when he realized he couldn't beat out Peyton.

Brandon Stewart was a better athlete than Peyton. Peyton was a better game manager And both learned on the job that year. Peyton won out. Had Colquit remained healthy I still thing Peyton and Brandon would have been in the running for Quarterback and would still have been playing. Neither was going to red shirt. Had Heath been on the team none of them would have got much of a look that year which is why Peyton made it a requirement of him signing with UT that Heath leave early.

I am an old fart that has been watching UT since Dewey Warren was quarterback (although my first UT game to attend had Mallon Faircloth as a single wing tailback). The game is very different now. The thread is “best UT QB” so not just as a passer. Very good QBs mentioned in the thread, but my top three (in alphabetical order) would be Andy Kelly, Bobby Scott, & Dewey Warren. With Scott and Warren, you are not going to get the passing stats, but they could make plays when needed.

Re Kelly, I was at the AL game in Birmingham in 1989 when Kelly replaced Sterling Hinton. While we lost, I remember thinking that we have found an outstanding quarterback.

In hindsight I will also say that Dobbs is moving up on the list. I am now convinced that his play is what carried us those years.

I did not see the Ainge thread that was mentioned so I don’t know what it was about, but re Ainge I cannot help but see him panicked in the end zone at LSU in 2005 throwing a 3-yard pick six, and again in the 2007 SEC Championship against LSU throwing another pick six.

I was at that game as well. Kelly and Shular were a lot alike except Shular was a better runner.

I remember when I was younger and Shuler left early it made me so mad but it was a good thing if it got us Manning.
