Best SEC Team ever?

I just moved here from El Paso, but I've heard that the 1998 UT team lucked its way into the NC game and played a Florida State team that was without its starting QB. Anybody else heard that?

We didn't have our future All-Pro and NFL single season rushing record holder.

Last years Florida team was far luckier than our 1998 team.

The 1998 VOLS had some good luck for sure, but so has every team that I have seen go undefeated. Notre Dame, Nebraska, Alabama, USC...on and on. The 98 Vols won with Defense and more Defense, and pounding the rock with a mobile quarterback. I wouldn't rate them as the best all time SEC team, but I say they are in the top 5. :peace2:

Hah - what a joke. The 04' Auburn team would not have stood a chance against USC... gotta agree with kpt on this one.

They never put up 40 points on chizik in 2 years how in the world are they just going to put 40 on them?? JC was a 5th year qb who did not make mistakes teams tried and he just didn't do it...I hope your not trying to compare that overrated OU team to AU Auburn would have beaten USC in that game it would have been the 3rd time in 3 years they would have faced each other so both teams knew what to expect...another thing heisman trohpy winner Carson Palmer only put 21 points agaist AU so 40 points is stretch my friend

They put up 38 against a Chizik-coached Texas defense that was probably just as good or better than the Auburn defense.

Silly argument. We beat Cal in 06, more than USC did in 06, so does that mean we were any better then? I agree that USC would have beat Auburn that year, but that argument never gets anywhere.

It's no sillier than saying a team that couldn't manhandle a Rick Clausen led Vols team would beat the second most dominant team this decade.

Then why didn't we win it?

The game was held in USC's backyard. We didn't bring our entire team. Their entire team probably rode bicycles to the game. Additionally, their entire fanbase was there. How many Vol fans do you think could afford to travel cross-country to see a football game in 1939?

The 98 UT team should definitely be ranked higher. That defense was loaded, travis henry was an absolute manchild, and peerless price would burn you. There is a computer ranking of the greatest college football teams ever and it comes out like this:

Billingsley’s Top 200 Teams of All Time

I, however, will not argue against that 92 alabama team. They were really really good. I bleed orange and hate the tide, but I love watching the george teague strip.

YouTube - Alabama's George Teague: "The Strip"

That receiver, Lamar Thompson, was supposedly a track star or something, but Teague caught him from a good 7 yards back and stripped him standing up. One of the most amazing college football plays I've ever seen (even though the play got called back).

tired and over played. name a nt team that didn't have a few bounces the right way during a season. Miami 01, Neb in 97, TN in 98, FL in 06, OSU in 02.......the list can go on and on.......

and let's not forget.....FSU came in to that game as a FAVORITE, and that was with The Rooster as the qb, not CW.

when i think about teams though as "best ever" i think about teams that stood out. and in my lifetime.....that was Bama 92 and TN 98. Aub 93 might be up there as well.

The '97 team would've been unstoppable if it had the '98 defense. I seem to recall the '97 defense as inconsistent(big shocker) all season.

The 1939 UT team that went unscored upon in the regular season should get a lot of votes but....

The 1992 Bama team should be #1 in my opinion.

What I said was a fact. FSU didn't have their starting QB in. I shouldn't have quoted the whole post. It just seemed funny to me that he asked if anyone had heard FSU didn't have their starting QB. I wasn't trying to imply that UT fluked their way to a title.

I think the 13-0 Auburn team that got shunned in the national game was the best SEC team I have seen in the last decade or so.
