The longer he stays off the field, the longer the delay before the Vol "fans" start posting how bad he sucks, how they wish he had never come here, how much better Nance or Worley could/would be and so on.
Might be the most consistent UT tradition, bashing our own players until we feel better. Just ask Crompton, Ainge, Clausen, Clausen, Foster, Riggs, Martin, et al. Thank God for Manning that we didn't have message boards in his day or we would have posters on record advocating for his benching, stating he was only playing due to his family name. I can see it now "Start Todd Helton now, save the season".

Dumb.

Lets look at the math here: Simms has 1 year left of eligibility after the season and Bray has 3. That's 2 more seasons of playing in Orange than Simms.

So we can let him sit behind a quarterback that is not any better than him or we can let him start playing now and gain experience for the future. Bray has to see the field to improve, he can take the verbal beating this year and have 3 years of better play or sit this year and take the verbal beating next year and have 2 years of better play.

Must not have been in Neyland during Manning's freshman season. The calls for Brandon Stewart were loud and clear.

I'm all for playing him. Nothing against Simms he has talent, but this team needs to focus on the future. Bray is just that, and the more he plays the better he gets. I'm not going to bash Simms nor Bray, heck the whole team. It is not thier fault, its the past staff. Bray gains nothing sitting on the mench, and Simms gain nothing playing. What I learned being on this board is this is a stong fan base that loves this team, but they will skin you alive too.

Unproven that playing before you are ready leads to better outcomes. As far as him being better currently, what do you base that on? A good drive against a second and third string UGA defense playing a psuedprevent after the game was no longer in question?

Obviously Dooley believes that currently, Simms should start. He sees them in practice, we don't. It certainly would be a little easier for Dooley if he could also say that he has a true freshman at QB when discussing our ass whoopings. It also seems that if he believed they were at least equal to each other in ability to help us win, then if he believed as you do, that playing more now will pay off in the future, then why doesn;t he start him? It could be he feels he s lacking in some areas, or maybe he is concerned about his size. Only the coaches know for sure.
1 thing is sure though, when UT looses, our fans love to eat their young.

Peyton Manning's College Highlights

1994 - Games/Started: 11/8 - Played vital role in Tennessee offense following injuries to starter Jerry Colquitt in UCLA opener and replacement Todd Helton in fourth game, against Mississippi State - Led Vols to 7-1 record as a starter and was named Freshman of the Year in the Southeastern Conference - Hitting 12 of 19 passes for 189 yards and breaking loose for 29-yard run, he sparked team to 45-23 conquest of Virginia Tech in Gator Bowl - First touchdown pass of career was 76-yarder to Kendrick Jones against Mississippi State.

You are most definately right. That being said, i'm for playing Bray. More he plays now, the better we are next year. Dont worry though, if he doesnt get better i will be chanting Worley, Worley!!

Am I reading this wrong or did you say Peyton ran the ball for a 29 yard gain on one play?

Exactly what I was thinking. Stewart was a fan favorite during Manning's freshman year and a lot of it had to do with Peyton being Archie's son whereas Stewart earned his way. (Not my feelings now but was the stereotype feeling at the time.) The underdog and backup QB will always be a fan favorite with all fan bases - not just TN.

So let me get this straight. Bray has not played enough to know whether or not he is worse than Simms, but he has played enough to know he is just as good as Simms? Interesting logic.

Why not give Nance a chance? We have seen what Simms and Bray can do. Simms atleast is a leader and is tough, Bray hasn't really shown much more than he is still learning and not ready to play at this level.

Bray hasnt played a game yet, and youve seen what he can do??? WOW, we need you to evaluate our recruits, all you would have to do is watch one or two series of their highschool game, tell us if they have what it takes. Seems like a plan to me.

Ummmm... Dooley doesn't have to start Bray to believe that he needs to be playing. He just needs to play him more and more, which he is doing, until he devolps beyond where Simms is. This debate will be settled on the field not by the coaches now. When a true leader emerges it will be clear to us all. Until then expect this QB competition to continue in practce and on game days. Bray has gotten more reps with the starters this week in practice and has impressed Poole according to his comments after practice. Let's hope that translates into this weekends game. They both play like FR. The problem with that is that one of them is a JR.
