I wanted to say Tony Thompson as the underrated player but after all almost any back would have been on the bench with Webb and Cobb. I still remember the great year he had. He helped get Tennessee to the Sugar Bowl along with UF being in trouble.

Underrated is going to an interesting discussion. I could see Little Man Stewart and Travis Stephens in the argument, but to put a spin on the idea, I am going to throw Travis Henry in the mix. At the end of his career he started to get recognition, but for much of his time in Knoxville all you heard about was Jamal Lewis. I had a friend who made a brilliant observation that we had one running back that started and another that produced.

My fellow Morristown native and former team mate had a good and long NFL career.

Wow. Just watched highlights from the 1990 Cotton Bowl and Chuck Webb went OFF! Wish I coulda seen him back then...

The nice thing is there a lot of RBs to choose from....

Best: Always been a Webb fan. An amazing combo of speed and power.

Underrated: I'll go old school and say McEver. I believe that Neyland was once quoted as saying he was the best player he ever coached.... That should count for something. And I think he still holds the TD records for game, season, and career.

Close second in both: Garner

Again, surprised no one has mentioned Johnny Majors, but I would guess he's a little too long ago for most on here.

For me:

Best would be J. Lewis

Underrated would be Foster

Lewis was a beast before he got injured, was still a beast afterwards too just slightly different. As for Foster, he ranks I believe 2nd on all time rushing yards? That is putting in some work for someone who was bashed and trashed as much as he was.

Idk, best i've seen that did work with no o-line was Hardesty. Lewis was good too.

iirc, Chuck Webb could have run for 350 had he not been pulled in the Ole Miss game late in the '89 season

After the fact, though, Charlie Garner is the most underrated. He does not get the love he deserves.

Sure he does. Everyone I respect as a knowledgable fan has him in their top 5. I would take him over Lewis every single day and twice on Sunday.

I don't know if it is on YouTube, but the run Garner made at Alabama in 1993 was epic. Much like Webb's run against Arkansas and Johnnie Jones' run at Alabama

As far as underrated goes, my vote is for Cedric Houston. I REALLY enjoyed watching him run the ball because he always looked like he was giving it his all. Montario Hardesty did too but he was more talented running back.
