The same could be said for Babe Ruth.

When I see a #3, I think of Earnhardt, but I'm not going to make the argument that he's the most important or memorable #3 in sports. You can't make that argument when such a large chunk of the country is ignorant when it comes to NASCAR. You'd have to be to think the name 'Earnhardt' isn't fairly well known around the country, especially after his death.

#6-Dr.J

6 - Bill Russell. No other nominees accepted.

7 - Mantle or Elway?

8 - I like Joe Morgan but I'd go with Ripken.

9 - Ted.

10 - Tarkenton I suppose. No other #10s coming to mind.

#1- I'm a huge Billy Martin fan, but it's Oscar Robertson, with Ozzie Smith a distant second.
#2-Deon Sanders at FSU.
#3-Ruth.
#4-Gehrig. Honorable mention to Favre and Bobby Orr.
#5- A number of choices. Hornung, Brett. However DiMaggio is the choice.
Johnny Bench #5? No consideration.

Bench was an oversight on my part. However. he still falls behind DiMaggio.

I cannot think of two more self absorbed athletes. It is ironic that they shared a number.

I agree but there is also a sizeable number of people who dont give a crap about baseball either.

yeah but yall act like nascar is nothing.

it is #2 only behind the nfl.
This is also a historical list. What's the historical popularity of NASCAR vs. pro/college football, pro/college basketball or MLB? Or even the NHL for that matter? I'm not using this as an opportunity to rip on NASCAR. I'm asking a legit question. I know NASCAR has surged recently but the last couple years aside, virtually nobody outside of the south followed the sport. Once again, this is an all-time list.

But I can guarantee you most of them will still know who Babe Ruth is. He transcended sports. Ruth is on a level of pure Americana.

Just like they'll know the name Earnhardt, he made a sport what it is and put it on the map.

that is ur opinion. not everyone's

dale sr is my pick.
Given that baseball dates back to before the Civil War and NASCAR dates back to the 1950s, it's an indisputable fact.

give it some more years.

and i say ruth has tons more historical value than dale but here is my problem. no one that is breathing except some old folk seen him play. we know nothing exept the monster fish stories we have been told.

ruth played without all the media we have now and all the publicity. he is like a bigger than life fairy tale like paul bunyun and some of the stories i hear are very far fetched. but we got to see dale sr first hand. all his stuff is taped and sealed.

to me that difference means alot.
