Best LB

In my short life span (I'm eighteen years old) the best linebacker at UT has been Al Wilson. He was not only a solid player, but was the perfect definition of a leader.

Jerod Mayo is fast becoming one of my favorites of the past few years. Although he is good, he has a way to go before he becomes Al Wilson.

Al Wilson....Best in this decade..period!

"Hacksaw" Reynolds....I remember reading the story in the Nashville Tennessean...about his anger!!! I remember that "nick" carrying over to the NFL.

My fave....gotta' be Dale Jones....undersized, over achiever.....saw him play...got the autograph.....MAN, what a playaar'!

Al Wilson is my favorite, I honestly think we would not have won the NC without him. He was the team leader, not just defense.

But I think the best linebacker relative to those who played at the same time would have to be :

Jack Reynolds
Steve Kiner
Dale Jones

These guys absolutely controlled the line of scrimmage, most teams would try to run away from them.

I agree with your premise, but Reynolds, Kiner and Jones didn't play at the same time.

I guess I didn't make that clear enough. What I was trying to say was compared to other LBs that played at the same time. Are you just messing with me? :)
I had the pleasure of seeing all the LBs on the original list of this post play at UT, and yes there was a time when we were called LBU. I was a student when Reynolds cut the car in half with a hacksaw. It was one of those fraternity fund raisers where you paid to hit a car that had Bama painted all over it with a sledge hammer. Reynolds didn't think a sledge hammer gave the appropriate message.

Sorry, I misread what you meant. Won't be the first or last time that happens with me... :shades:

There is without doubt and I'm a youngin', 23 to be exact, that Al Wilson is the best linebacker to come throught the University of Tennessee.

This isn't the Chuck Webb vs. Jamal Lewis battle of young and old Tennessee fans. I could care less how many cars got cut in half, Al Wilson is the best linebacker that has ever suited up for UT.

I saw some time ago that Al got cut/released by Denver because of injuries, I think. What actually happened? Where is he now? What a man!

There is Kiner, Reynolds, and Walker.... and then there is everyone else.

People said Al Wilson would be special until his senior season. When he really was.

You may doubt me on Walker, but he was the first and best of the speed 'backers at UT. He was an unbelievable talent.

Al Wilson, one of my favorite VOLS period. He was the ultimate leader and demanded accountability from his teammates - not to mention he was talented, played smart, and was a ferocious hitter.

Dale Jones was also a greater leader and had the heart of a lion but not quite all the physical tools Al had.

Not old enough to see Kiner or Hacksaw first hand.

He suffered a neck injury in a game. He came back that season. That offseason the Broncos tried to trade him to the Giants and he failed the physical. The Broncos then just cut him. He will not be able to play again because there is no doctor that will clear him for fear of breaking his neck and becoming paralyzed.

Two that played together was Frank Emanuel and Tom Fisher. Fisher was one year behind and was killed in auto accident returning from Florida to UT.
