Best College Football Stadiums

Hey, I just remembered that Neyland was ranked number 1 in an ESPN poll of the best college football staduims. I can't recall when that ranking was specifically given, but it was definitely in the last year. Anyone else remember?

P.S. Mr. Dodd seems to be a bit deficient in his college football knowledge.

Sporting News also gave Neyland that rating. Certainly in the top 5 of anyone with a pulse.

I'm not sure about comparing just stadiums, but my son and I went to the Auburn Ark game last year and loved it. Don't get me wrong I love going to Neyland but I thought for a smaller stadium Jordan Hare is pretty electric when the fans are fired up. The eagle landing, all the different stadium cheers, and tomers corner made for a great day. We are trying to make it around some of the other stadiums in the SEC to see what they are like, thinking of trying to check out GA, Bama, or Ole Miss this year. The only place I have no desire to go see at all is The Swamp! I'm a Vol through and through but I love college football and the SEC and want to see what it is like at some of our SEC Brethren's places.

Amazing when you when the national title in it, huh :dance2:

My first trip to the Rose Bowl was to watch Bama get beat by UCLA. I still loved it. It's like Lambeau Field: it may not be the flashiest, but it's hard not to love it.

I like the classic look of tiger stadium

I agree. I kind of feel the same way about the Neyland renovations as well. They look amazing, but it kind of feels like we're losing something along the way. There is still something to be said for the experience that accompanies the lower level of the south and east sides of the stadium. Sure, it's crowded, dark and dingy, but it's almost like stepping back in time down there because it's very much the same as it was when it was first built in the 30's and 40's. It's kind of cool to think that part of the gameday experience has remained unchanged through 7+ decades and several generations of Vol fans. I'll always remember everyone cramming into that tiny, narrow concourse wating out the thunderstorm last season during the Oregon game.

Neyland is a very cool and historic stadium but that rain evacuation was a disaster. I hope they make those concourses wider.

The concourses have been widened in about half the stadium, and rest are scheduled to be done in the coming years. I'm not sure when they're planning on launching the next phase of renovations though. I know they aren't doing anything major this offseason like they have the past couple years.

In addition to a few SEC schools, I've been to games at some of the tradition rich schools outside of Sec and here is what I thought of their stadiums:

Penn State: Good atmosphere and tons of tradition. It was good but didn't blow me away. Even though it has 100,000+ seats, you are a long way from field and sound escapes. Not that loud. Tailgating was mediocre.

Michigan: Same as Penn St. Tons of tradition, huge but not that loud. Probably the least fan friendly of all the big stadiums. It is all one level so imagine trying to get that many people to exits at halftime. Terrible in that regard. Tailgating mediocre.

Ohio State: A little better than Penn State and Michigan but didn't blow me away. It was more fan friendly and dotting the I pretty cool. Fans were loud but not SEC loud. Scenery was not that great either. Tailgating mediocre.

Rose Bowl: Went to our game against UCLA. Pretty hard to judge because they were terrible then (even though they beat us) and there were tons of empty seats. It is much nicer than LA Coliseum where USC plays. Parking on golf course was pretty cool and tailgating was pretty good.

Kentucky: Driving up to their stadium is a bit like driving up to a big high school game. Not trying to be funny. It has that feel. Fans are louder than I thought considering it doesn't seat what most SEC stadiums do. Tailgating pretty good.

Georgia: Have to say this stadium was one of the biggest letdowns. I thought the atmosphere was lackluster and you are so far away from the game in the upper deck, it was easy to get distracted.Lot of noise escapes there. Just the opposite of what the guy in article said. Tailgating was great and scenery unreal. Plus, Athens is a great college town so that makes up for a lot.

South Carolina: It is just hard to have a great pregame atmosphere when you aren't on campus. That was my biggest gripe with Bryce Stadium. Fans were good and it was pretty loud. It was above average but not great in nearly every aspect.

Neyland: Impossible for me to be objective but when you combine the setting (Vol Navy, mtns in background, SEC atmosphere, tradition, etc.,) it is right at top. I think it's clear advantage over the other mega stadiums is you are so close to the field. The guy writing the CBS article didn't even speak about this and to me, it was most glaring advantage Neyland had over all other mega stadiums. It is like the old Detroit Tiger Stadium was to watch a baseball game. Also, the team running through the T is the coolest pregame band tradition anywhere.

I hope check off all SEC stadiums in next couple of years. Really want to go to Notre Dame and make the Oregon trip in a couple of years.

Samford is a nice place to watch a game. Neyland or Samford could be 3a and 3b on my list. Tiger and Bryant-Denny are 1 and 2. None of the others are close.

WRONG....Neyland is only rated lower on here because of our recent decline on the field. I am not dissing other stadiums but if all things were equal, wins on the field i mean, i take Neyland over LSU or Bama. When you win on the field everything else goes up on the list, with the exception of Arch , and that , like the Team is improving at UT, and it wont be long.

disclaimer:i have not been to Tiger field but have been to Bryant Denny, Sanford Stadium and app 30 games at Neyland.

I disagree. Bryant-Denny is laid out better, easier to get around, has much nicer premium seat areas, suites that Neyland can't even fantasize about, better sound and video setups, and more appealing architecture.

1. Leave trailer park
2. Get on a bus north to Knoxville
3. Go to Neyland to see it since renovation
4. Put foot in mouth

DUDE the Tennessee river and the Appy mountains in thebackgroud already trump 99% of the stadiums out there..

SEE for YOURSELF

Neyland is BY FAR BETTER than bryant denny

Sun Devil is great for not only games but the scene after. The bars/streets after a USC or UCLA game were amazing

Your pic of Bryant-Denny is at least two years old. Lots of changes since then.

Did you guys put in a river and some mountains?

That was basically the point of my pics... the natural surroundings in Knoxville are simply much more picturesque. Not to mention that we have a VOL NAVY.

The above aerial pic of Neyland is old as well....BD and Neyland renovations are overall somewhat similar with closing in one end and giving the place a facelift... Your victories on the field definately help BD atmosphere.

Okay, I'll give Neyland better scenic beauty. Doesn't change the other ways in which Bryant-Denny is superior. After all, when I'm deciding which stadium is better, I'm adding up the ways in which the place makes it enjoyable to watch a football game, not the ways in which it makes it enjoyable to look at mountains.
