Best Coach?

With all that has been going on with Pearl me and my friend have been talking. He believes Pearl will be back because of his body of work. I'm on the other side of the fence and believe he is gone, but to get to my point he said Pearl was the best coach we've ever had. I know took us to the Elite 8 which was the farthest we had been. Pearl is certianly the best coach we've had in my lifetime, but for some of you with more knowledge of TN basketball history, would you say he was our best coach or someone else?

I'd go with Mears still. He maintained a higher winning percentage over 15 seasons. If the tourney had its current structure, I think he'd have made multiple elite eights and possibly a couple Final Fours.

I've not followed Vol BB long enough to have a say in who the best coach in Tennessee history has been. I do believe this... It takes more than a W/L record to be considered "the best". Bruce Pearl's actions and decisions take him out of consideration.

Before this season with all the distractions and violations that have gone on, Mears actually had a lower winning percentage than Pearl. Now I know it's ridiculous to say this season didn't count towards CBP's win percentage, but I believe there is definitely an asterisk due to the suspension and lack of contract. I am by no means a Pearl defender but the two have had similar success at UT with Pearl giving us a number 1 ranking several years back. I personally think he should only be fired if we have a replacement that is fully capable of taking up where he left off. Just my 2 cents

Mears is the best coach IMO. Bruce has done a lot for the program and I'd put him at second best.

I agree. Mears would have made some deep runs in tournament with todays formats.

Ray was a very good coach at UT and had some great players. Believe he had the "Ernie/Bernie" duo. They were probably the best ever scoring duo in college basketball -both at 25 ppg. Correct me if I'm wrong on that. It may have been just for one year, but don't think any two have come near that.

I hope so, but I have no faith a big name coach will be hired. I hope I am proved wrong. At any rate it sure is an exciting time, with all the speculation.

I'm with you on Mears being the best coach...just look at his record against Kentucky. However, you might be stretching it a bit to say he would have had multiple elite eights and final four appearances. I realize they only had 16 teams but he still never won a game in the NCAA tournament. He would have many more chances in today's format, but you still have to beat some really good teams to make the elite 8.
