I feel like the best case scenario for the team, recruits, UTAD, coaches, and lastly the fans would be the following:

1. Get rid of one of the 2 DB coaches, or possible both and consolidate into 1 position like it is usually is
2. Hire a stud LB coach so Sal can focus solely on DC job, or demote Sal to LB coach and bring in another DC with a multiple system ( perhaps 4-3 base, perhaps 3-4, whatever we can execute better)
3. Evaluate the job of the DL Ciach and see of he should be retained

As far as Head Coach goes, Dooley should stay through his contract bc/ the team is showing major improvement on offense and in competitiveness......

When a program is left to die, which is the basic state that Fulmer, then Kiffin left it in, it can take a minimum of 4-5 years to rebuild..... Sal's Defense and the backend communication is the biggest problem....

Dooley oversees Offense and Special Teams, which overall have both been good.... Dooley made a bad choice with Sal, but it's not smart to fire Pittman, Graham, Chaney, Coiner, etc bc/ of the Defense.....

Even though the Defense is playing poor, the secondary's poor players and lack of a pass rush are largely to blame too.....so part of it is talent which will take time to recruit more speed and more talent in.....

I know it's been a tough year but Dooley will
Get the job done....I don't think a 6-9 million
Dollar buyout will help the program, and if
I was Dooley I would not resign bc the Defensive Coordinator was bad and the other guy split bc he couldn't take the pressure....

Best Case Coaching Scenario is for Dooley to be out of a job in Knoxville.

We've been down this road. Dooley changed almost all of his staff last year. Kinda obvious who/what the problem is.

No more Sal. He had his chance and has failed miserably. And without major injuries.

This seems like a well thought out and reasoned argument (which I do disagree with, but reasonable anyway). However, I do hope that somewhere you have a fire extinguisher for what is about to occur.

I think a lot of people underestimate how big of a change Sal's defense is. Even Alabama struggled their first year in a new system similar to this one.

Struggling is one thing, giving up 30+ points a game while still seeing the same mistakes we made in game 2 is unacceptable at this level.

The D is actually getting worse, not better.

I think Dooley should go. If Dooley had to stay he would have to get a big name Defensive Cord., all defensive position coaches. I would also get psychiatry help to bray so he want choke at end of game. Who could fix brays brain and who would be stupid enough to coach 1 year at Tennessee on Deffense.

The point being made by the OP is the head coach is not responsible for his program and his record. Its the players and assistant coaches (oh and the Fans, lets not forget the Fans) fault that the Vols have lost at least 5 SEC games each of the past 3 years!!!!

thats the best case you can come up with.... I give you a better one

1, Fire Dooley and all his staff

2. Hire Coach Gruden and turn him loose on the rest of the SEC

When there are 2million dollars in unsold seats this weekend for our Homecoming game, and another million in season tickets per home game unsold next year, we will see if your logic about the buyout holds water.

If Dooley is HC for Tennessee in 2013, then Hart will be fired within 2 years. You can't just sit back losing money and hope it all works itself out. If you keep losing(all DD has ever done) the $$ will continue to be short. If the new HC can deal with Sal being LB's coach, I could see that working out in our favor. 1 less coach to hire. He has built some recruiting ties to recruits and we save the 1.84 million dollar buyout. He did prove he could coach backers at Bama. Jay, Hinshaw, and Pittman are all guys I could see getting a chance to stay IF any coach expect Gruden is hired. If it is Jon, I think he cleans house and brings in all his own guys. This is another reason I think it is Kirby Smart in the end. Smart would likely be more willing to keep a few guys left over from this staff. Smart would also not demand 3.5 Million a year plus.

Get this "set the program back stuff" out of here. It's about getting the right guy. Look at Brady Hoke, Brian Kelly (who I wanted when Fulmer left), Harbraugh (former Stanford coach). I do respect Dooley for getting the roster better and improving off field problems, but I feel he is just not the guy for this job if you want to win championships (SEC or National).

Any time the words "best case scenario" and "Dooley should keep his job" are used together, every one knows that the sentence is flawed.

Dooley should have been fired after UK. I am sure that many other coaches could have UT at 3-5 this season.

Will you tell me what Gruden has done other than win a super bowl with someone else team and get fired.
