With the list of teams I know about:
TN football: Ranked #12
TN Mens Basketball: Ranked #4
TN Womens Basketball: Ranked #1
TN Track & Field: Ranked #2
TN Women's Softball: Ranked #4 and #5

I'm sure there are more of our teams ranked, but doesn't this say that TN might have the best all-around sports program in the nation right now?

Thoughts?

It's nice to see that TN has solid athletics all around, but until that #12 turns back into #1 something will be missing. I'm no negavol, but I want us to be great again, preferably WITH Fulmer.

I think you might have to look at USC in that same group as Stanford and Texas. Although we typically associate "top program" with the major sports I think those three are at the top.

Stanford wins the cup because they field a sports team for every available sport. It helps to have a billion dollar endowment.

Kansas is up there this year too I think. They were like 4th in football and before this week 3rd in basketball?

Kansas does not play the amount of sports that the above mentioned west coast schools do.

Florida. They win the hardware in the sports that are the most competitive. I could care less how many titles Stanford wins in squash and water polo.

If you consider just the big 3 sports of Football, Mens and Womens Basketball, Tennessee has to be the best in current overall National ranking.

Vanderbilt has 3.5x that much....doesn't seem to help them much.

Actually, Stanford's endowment is $17.2 billion. Vandy's is $3.4 billion. Even Division III Williams has a $1.9 billion endowment. All of those high-brow private schools are rolling in money. Some of the Ivy league schools put Stanford to shame.

SMU is "only" at $1.3 billion, but we saw in the 1980s what they could do with their money...at least until they were busted.

When Duke had the lacrosse frame-up, some of their rich benefactors seriously suggested Duke buy up all the neighborhoods around the school, demolish them and put up a fence. They didn't do it, but it wouldn't have hurt them financially.

Precisely, plus we have strong showings in other sports as well. I'm pretty sure our golf, tennis, and swimming teams were all ranked pretty high this year. Stanford might win because of golf, squash, and croquet, but I think TN has performed better than anyone this past year in all-around real sports.

We came in 5th or 6th in the Directors Cup this past year.

And that's without having a ton of the varsity sports that they count.

Edit: we came in 7th. Our highest ranking in the directors cup ever, with 19 of our 20 varsity athletics advancing to post-season play. Stupid baseball had to ruin us.
