I am curios how others feel about this. Eric Bery is possibly gonna start this Sat. What bugs me is that we have true frosh who is pushing upperclassmen for a starting position. Is berry that good, or are we that bad at that position that he just looks good? It is kind of like when Clausen was competing with Ainge for starting role before the '05 season. We should have all known something was wrong. We knew Clausens physical limitations, but the coaches made it sound like more of a "he is that good" kind of thing. I am not saying that Eric is not good, just hope that our seniors aren't that bad.

I have seen some scrimmage highlights of him and my conclusion is that it's a little of both.

Berry seems to have everything you need in a corner...size, speed, quickness, instincts, intelligence...so I think no matter what he would be pushing for time.

But...if we still had Inky and Fellows he might not be seeing as much time and almost certainly wouldn't be a likely starter this year

From everything I have seen and read Berry appears to be the real deal. Although he will see significant playing time against Cal, I think he's only an official starter in the Nickel Package. I think Gaines and Johnson are underated at their positions by the way. I look for the secondary to be a strength by the Florida game. Can anyone confirm the rumor of Berry wanting #10 next year. Would love to already have his jersey.

Rick Clausen and Eric Berry are not comparable at all.
Eric Berry has the talent to be a star. Possibly the best CB in the SEC...if he reaches his full potential.

projecting a qb is a lot harder than CB. If berry really has the ability you guys think he does I can't imagine he wont at least be a solid starter.

berry is every bit that good.. and i think johnson and gaines are way underrated. I think they will surprise some people this year but, berry will be an all american here. NO DOUBT

Berry is no doubt the real deal. Size, speed, and atheletic ability is off the charts. He hits like a truck and is also quite intelligent.

I think the excitement comes from what the coaches have said. CPF has never been one to really give praise like this to a true frosh before.

Not trying to compare Clausen with Berry. Just saying that the ability was not there and that is the reason we started Clausen. Could be said that is also the reason Berry could be starting. No competition. I hope he is the real deal, but I am very nervous that we dont have an experienced corner with enough talent to beat out the freshman.

I was thrilled we signed Berry and figured he'd be a great player at Tennessee. But I haven't seriously considered him to be one of "those players" that everyone has made him out to be. The kind that come in and have an outstanding freshman year and only get better as they become the best in the nation at their position. Like Manning's progression at qb. Those guys don't come along to often.

I'm not drinking the Berry flavored Kool-Aid that much just yet, but after hearing how he's played in practice and scrimmages thus far I'm at least considering it a possibility.

I wasn't either until I saw him in person. Yes, he is really damn good

That's a good point. CPF's typical line with youngsters is, "They're learning" or "They'll get there." But he seems to be pretty clear about Berry's impact right away.

I'm a little confused about your analogy with Ainge and Clausen since it is exactly the opposite of the current situation at cornerback. Clausen was a senior and Ainge was a sophomore. Ordinarily you would expect the senior to win the job.

Ainge was the starter the year before, may not have been the best analogy though.
