From Sporting News:

Eric Berry, S, Tennessee

"No one doubts Berry has the athleticism and talent to be an impact player in the NFL, but teams are trying to figure out why he did not always produce as much as he could have. He needs to explain why his tackling was so bad and convince teams it was the result of mistakes rather than a hesitance to hit bigger ball-carriers. Additionally, if Berry wants to be considered a safety-first prospect, he needs to prove he has the toughness and willingness to tackle to overcome concerns about his lack of ideal size."

From Sporting News:

this is the same organization that has crompdaddy as the number 2 overall qb correct (or just a second rounder)? i dont exactly think i care about their evaluations, but thanks for the update just the same.

I think this evaluation is ridiculous, mainly due to the fact that Berry played a hybrid linebacker role last year. I did see where at certain times he could get lost, but I think that was in part to him basically playing an unfamiliar position. He went from one of the hardest hitting safeties in the league his sophomore year, to them questioning if he wants to hit people his junior year. I feel like he is getting the "Matt Leinart" punishment, where the evaluators are just trying to tear him down (Unfortunately to date they were right about Leinart). I never saw Berry back away from any tackle to be honest. A guy that is a perfect safety center fielder with good hands, and great open field skills when he has the ball. Also a good run stopping safety and one that you can match up on a slot receiver and there is no advantage to the offense.

I hope teams really are worried about these things. I will cry tears of joy if he falls to the Titans because some idiot GMs think Eric freaking Berry is afraid to hit bigger backs.

You're right. Berry never "backed away" from a tackle and he was a "hard hitter." But how many times did we see him lower the shoulder and lay the wood only to have the ball carrier bounce off and keep going because he didn't wrap up? The big hit looks good - if it also results in a tackle. Otherwise, it looks like he would rather make SportsCenter than a tackle. Just sayin.
Before the bashing begins, lemme say that I think EB is the best safety I have ever seen in the college game and I hope he's a top 3 pick. I'm just saying that I remember watching some of his hits - even if the ball carrier fell - and thinking "you gotta wrap up to stop most guys in the NFL."

Would Timmy Tebow be considered a "bigger ball-carrier"?? If so, then someone needs to show the author of this last years Berry/Tebow collision, because this statement is just plain ludicrous!!

i remember thinking this watching UT play auburn last year. EB came screaming for the running back and flew into him shoulder first and their rb just bounced off like a pin ball and kept going.

EB needs to add some film of the tebow hit and the moreno hit last year. I have seen him, go for the big hit and not wrap up, but i have also seen spin in mid air after beign hit by him, its a risk reward thing, there isnt a coaching staff in america that can take him and ensure he wraps up more. I wish i had a job that let me voice my opinion on something i clearly didnt understand and get paid for it

That really is not an accurate evaluation.

Berry is a tackling machine and is not afraid of contact of any kind.

i remember EB hitting Tate from Auburn this year head on and basically spun Tate around in the other direction, it was sick

Too much homerism tbh.

I love EB and everything he did while he was here. But he had some horrible tackling this past season. Sure he laid some hits in turn but Ole Miss and Auburn games stand out as games he could not tackle a paper sack.

He was on ST too much and he literally looked tired out there at times.

I would be willing to put money on him leading the missed tackles stat for the team.

But nobody will believe it since they cant look at it with from any other perspective.

and besides the issue is not if berry always makes the textbook tackle; it's if he hesitates to hit bigger runners

Where ever EB goes in the draft, whoever picks this freak of a safety isn't just getting a great player, they will be getting a game changer... the dude is a PLAYER.

They need to go back and watch some film. That sounds familiar...

Rod Wilkes has never, nor will he ever, miss a tackle. That's how seriously I take this thread and sporting news evaluation of Mr. Berry.
